Thanks
Excellent site, very active community spirit. Reminds me of here. Should you find any links with the Channel Islands, please drop me a line. Or maybe view our home site http://www.guernsey.net
Just discovered you! I was born on ES of VA and will visit your site often. Have been researching the Thorowgood line for many years--back to Adam. Should be able to corroborate much of our work from your information. Will share anything. Now I will dig deeper in the Dukes lineage here also. THANKS FOR THIS SITE.
I read with interest Wayne Stith's information. I am an African American Stith from Southampton County, Virginia. The Drewryville-Capron areas. It is believe that my ancestors were slaves of a John Stith in Sussex County. His widow, left the area and moved to Midfield Plantation in Capron. Her second marriage was to a Carey.
Hope to find out about ancestors burried at St. Johns Church in downtown Hampton, Va.
A very attractive and interesting site. I am researching the family of Nathaniel Bradford (ca1640-1690) Accomack Co Virginia.
Congratulations on a well done page. I look forward to visiting this page in the future.
Wanted -- Copes surname info. For my line I need information (complete name, childrens names, wife (Sarah Clarke?), date of birth) for Giles L. (may be Libby) Copes, born about 1769 and who died in Baltimore after 1840 but before 1850. Snail mail address - 3306 Brush Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042-3823
I live on the Eastern Shore (Cambridge) but my family mostly comes from central WV. However there are a couple of Accomack Co connections that I will getting back to you about. Just want to say that I have haunted hundreds of genealogy sites and yours is one of the best organized and complete sites I have have found. Keep up the good work.
Well done! Looking forward to seeing future contributions. I'm searching ancestors John COLLIER (1747? - 3/31/1826) married c.1772 Grizelda TAYLOR (1753 - 9/15/1848). She was daughter of James and Elizabeth (SMITH) Taylor of Belle Haven. Collier was a Revolution veteran, and they moved to Kentucky after the war.
What a great site. I am research the following surnames from the Eastern Shores area: Parker, Smith, Truitt, Hearne, Smith, Meredith.
I appreciate your directions to the ES HTML page. I am interested in family history/genealogy. I have been through ES many time and think it a beautiful country. I am searching for WILLIAM MAJOR and JOHN MAJOR of Virginia. I have studied the records of some of the Major and Stott families of ES. Would like to correspond with anyone of same interest. I am also studying MARTIN, GRIFFIN, AMBLER of Virginia. Thanks so very much for your effort. HerbH.
Am learning more and more about the Eastern Shore through Barrier Island Center - Thelma Peterson, Rick Kellam, John Verrill and others. It is fascinating and I am privileged to be a part of the development of the Center. I am with the Old Coast Guard Station in Virginia Beach.
I am Executive Director of The Old Coast Guard Station ( formerly Life-Saving Museum ) in Virginia Beach. Ann Dearman and myself are on the Board of Directors of the Barrier Island Center. We are working with Thelma Petersen and Rick Kellam and other to preserve Outer Banks history and artifacts.

Excellent!!! I will visit this site often. If anyone knows where I can find a picture of Capt. John Ed Johnson of the Life Saving Service and any pictures of his brothers, George and Jim, also of the Life Saving Service on Va.'s barrier islands, I will appreciate hearing from you. Keep up the good work!!
Congratulations to all involved in producing the GHOTES page. You're streets ahead of anyone down here on the nonetheless-photogenic Outer Banks. I wish that I could explore and exploit this resource right away, but I must defer gratification: Hurricane Fran is on her way. Keep up the good work.
GHOTES...what a discovery! Your site is incredible! I have been accumulating genealogical information on the Pettit's and the Snead's of the Eastern Shore for the past 6 months. If anyone can contribute or wants to share, please e-mail me at jamming@tnp.com. Thanks again for such a comprehensive forum!
Interesting. I'd need to study same to make comment.
Glad to see more and more genealogy pages on the web. Keep up the good work.
I'm researching MITCHELL and GRAY in the Caroline/Essex area.
Looking for info on Robins, Brittingham, late 1600's to 1800.
TYSON and WHELESS researcher. See my data at: http://www.charweb.org/gen/biddy/surnames.htm
One of my favorite places in the whole wide world. Regards to the Wescotts, Terrys and Youngs

Excellent! I have lived on the Eastern Shore forever. There is a special appreciation for the Eastern Shore and much I wish to learn. Thank You.

My roots are in the mid-west, southern tier of ny and in nc, but my summer heart is in the es. I'm an anthropologist and am interested in the role of food in es life then and now. just spent a wonderful morning in the courthouse in eastville, beginning to steep myself in es names and places. Anyone with thoughts about this topic ...give me a jingle, buzz..what do you give?
Hello! I am most impressed with the Ghotes web pages and hopefully I can be a contributor soon. I will get my notes and names together and list them as soon as possible. My brother and I are interested in a number of names that have given us a few headaches - with a lot of brick walls we have hit full force. I just found you all and am thrilled to have found a new genealogy source. Actually a friend of mine noticed my brother's name on another web site and recommended we try your page. Hope to sign in in the next few days. Mary Morrow p.s. My brother's address is acloud@airmail.net - the friend that let us in on this great site is Dan Trimble.

Many thanks for being here! Am just beginning to develop as interest in my past here on the Eastern Shore. Would like information about migration of the Hornsbys before & during their stint in the Harborton - Hacks Neck area..
Just found your site, courtesy of Dan Trimble, Monroe, La. Will come back and browse later to try and locate some errant Clouds, Drummonds, Paces and Kings among my ancestors. Thanks for providing the site.
I am looking for information on ZACHARIAH NELSON, son of THOMAS NELSON of Yorktown, Va., and father of THOMAS KING NELSON, b.abt. 1752, Tangier, Va. Also RIGGIN, Crisfield, Md. and GRAY, Worcester Co., Md.
This site is fabulous! I'm using up all my Prodigy free time viewing you. Thanks for being there.
Since I'm sort of new to the ESVA area and enjoy being here this is a great way to learn more about the history. There is a small cemetery surrounded by my property and I would like to know more about it. The names are Mary Jane Savage, John Savage, Susan Savage/wife of Major Savage, and Major Savage. One day I'll have time to go to the courthouse to get information. In the meantime, if anyone has information about the family I'd enjoy reading it. Whatever I should find out I'll relate to the GHOTES web site. I'm trying to clean up the cemetery and make it park-like.
I am researching the Godwin (Goodwin) family that apparently came to the Eastern Shore of Virginia sometime in the 1600's. My great-great-great grandfather married a Charlotte Godwin at Salem, Virginia in the early 1800's. Charlotte Godwin was from the Eastern Shore line. Would appreciate any info on the Godwins that others may have.

Nice site. Looking for any information re: Martins & Satchells. Specifically anything related to John Martin and Parmer Satchell
I need to get in touch with my Roots.
Am interested in any information in the Bellamy family. Only info I have is a reference in Whitelaw to a land transaction by a John Bellamy in the late 1600's.
I am from the Eastern Shore and I found your information very interesting; often when I tell folks where I grew up and of my experiences they are amazed to know that such an area exists so close to Washington. I am going to tell others from the Eatern Shore, who no longer live there, to check out your home page. KUDOS
This is my first attempt to use a Web site. I am interested in the name Tyson that you have listed. My Tyson ancestors came from the Eastern Shores of VA, Interested in contacting others with this same line.
I've just stumbled upon your site but I'm looking forward to visiting often. My early Virginia lines are Whitehead, Pace, Charlton, Watson and perhaps Loyless and Carter.
I recently changed Email address, but I really like GHOTES. I have already made several contacts through GHOTES.
Great site! Good to see someone taking the effort to show what the Eastern Shore is all about. If you would like them (or anyone) I have a few good pictures of the old Cobb Island Coast Gaurd stations. Moving of the newer of the two will soon be underway so future pictures won't exists of these Barrier Island historic sites.
I would like to find info on the House of Burgess, Sec'y. VENNER. I would like his first name and other info. Garnet donaldm@flash.net
This is a great page!! In this area I am researching Copes, Briddell/Bredell/ Lambden/Townsend/Parker/Harmon/Mason/Hudson/Hancock/Redden/Glass/Jones. I would love to talk
I am very interested in Eastern Shore Genealogy. I published the Brickhouse Family History in 1987 and have revised it in 1988, 1992 and 1995. The lasted edition includes 10,000 descendants of George Brickhouse & Hannah Luddington who married on the ES in 1661. Some connecting families: Watkins, Major, Belote, and lots more.
Good work,I am looking for information on the Horner and Colonna families in Northampton and Accomac counties.
I am working on the Parker family who originally came to the eastern shore in the mid 1600s. They occupied property in VA, MD, and DL. Any assistance, especially concerning the marriage of Samuel Parker to his first cousin, Polly Parker about 1793 (Polly's father was John, who served in the Rev. in a unit from DL,). Marriage likely took place in GA.
Great Page!!! Thanks for putting it out there... Hope I can connect with other Anderson researchers... I've got a mystery on my hands about John Anderson and a Talley family connection!
This is super.....just what expatriates like myself have needed.
We are a part of what THEY were and the source of what is to come.
Genetic memory?
Just found out about this web site for the eastern shore of Virginia. Great source of potential information. Thanks for caring enough to create this site. Looking for Bundicks who came in 1630s, and were mainly in the Accomac/Accomack area.
Good site. I have been researching my family and am descended from
William Justice of Charles City. His son Justinian had some children
who settled in Surrey and Accomack . I would be interested in finding
out more on them. I am descended from another son, John. Thanks
for this site. Tom Justice

Again you have a great site.
Linda in Ft Worth
Thank You Bill Groves for telling me about this site. It looks like a treasure chest of information. I will be back and post some questions myself I assure you.
I'm doing research and interested in any and all Shockey's.
Also Roseberry's in eastern Kentucky about 1880's. My Grandfather was
born there and at the age of 8 living with a woman by the name of Beverly Lewis. Any help as to who his parents are would be helpful. His name was James Franklin Roseberry. One story goes that he may have had a brother named Jack and a sister named Sara. He was born about 1885.
I grew up on the ESV (Exmore/Belle Haven/Painter). Mother's Name (Maiden) Margarite
Savage. I now live in Northern CA (Santa Rosa, Sonoma County). I'm so glad the
ESV is getting on the map! I tap in occasionally. It's wonderful to see this page!
I am a descendant of James and Isabell Pettyjohn, who lived in
Hungars Parish in Northampton in the 1650s and 1660s. James came
to the Eastern Shore around 1635 and was a successful Farmer &
Carpenter. The Pettyjohns lived on Church Neck, between Church
Creek and Hungars Creek, which today would be located nothwest of Easterville.

Martha Mewborn Marble referred me to your web site and I must say I am
very impressed. My congratulations to each of you for your contribution
to the field of genealogy. Best regards for your continuing success.
Just learned about your GHOTES page. I am interested in local history and genealogy. Most of all I like local expressions; you may have seen my Eastern Shore Wordbook. Would like to talk to you.

Still enjoying your wed site Barbara...keep up the good work.
Wow, this site is growing fast! Nice job. Keep up the good work.
Love to read about the Old Dominion. Thanks and I hope to move HOME soon.
I enjoyed this page and would have preferred to find some detailed
data regarding genealogy in it. I keep looking for data on my
earliest known American ancestors, Thomas & Elizabeth Jane Dalrymple
Johnston; I also research my Bryan ancestors, whom I know were in
Isle of Wight County during the 1600s...
What A Great Page!!! Thanks to Barbara Cox for taking the time and effort to produce a Genealogical page that I can use.
My mothers family is from Accomac/Locustville so I would like to contact everyone with the surnames of: GROTON, MEARS, LITTLETON, BULL, MARTIN, SHIELD, and more to be discovered. Get in touch.
This page will really open up the Eastern Shore research for those of us who are out of state.
I put the incorrect email address. Sorry, about that.
I am new at this, but not genealogy research. My thanks to all who have made the
GOTES Web site available to all researching the Eastern Shore.
I'm new on the net, but not to genealogy. I have ancestors who began
in America on VA's eastern shore. I hope I can share info with
others.
Jack, This is really great, Thanks for all of the information and
Keep up the good work.
Thanks to Connie Pruitt for directing me to this very interesting site. Am just now completing a book
that includes information on the Douglas-Willett-Goffigon line, many of whose descendants reside in the
New Orleans area. Would be interested in sharing my info with others who are researching these
families. Home address: 38 Huntsman's Horn Cir., The Woodlands, Tx., 77380. (713) 367 3147.

We love the GHOTES site! Can't wait to do some on-line family research. Keep up the good work!
I am just now starting to research my father's side of the family. (Stratton, Snead)
The family is from Exmore originally and moved to Long Island, NY sometime in the 1920's.
I met a family here in Pennsylvania (last name Bailey) who also have Stratton's in their family
from Eastern Shore. I am very excited about finding this list.
This is really great, my thanks to Barbara Cox and all who worked to set this up. I am happy just to have achieved access to this as I am not all that knowledgeable about computers. I shall add my information from my grandmother's bible, (Nina Drummond, Sanford) (as soon as I find it, it is still in a box from moving).
I am absolutely tickled pink about the GHOTES Weg Site. For 15
years now, I have tracing several families in the Chincoteague
area, but due to poor eye sight, it's more difficult to travel
there to do research. Thank you so much for allowing us this
opportunity to communicate with those interested in the Eastern
Shore. Keep up the good work!
Great idea! How appropriate to use the median of the future to
promote interest and appreciation of the past. Also, hats off to
the Book Bin and the Eastern Shore Public Library for their support
of Eastern Shore Geneology and History.
Bravo. This is a great venture. Many thanks to Barbara Cox and everone
else that have made this possible. It is very interesting and sooooo
much fun!
Good job keep it up
Very interesting. A great resource for those of us not living on the Shore. Thank you for all of the hard work each of you continues to invest in this project. I hope to learn more about the Beasley, Guy, White, and Hitchens families by following your online project.
Great Job!!! I'm new and slow at this but your set up is making it easy for me. I look forward to adding information as soon as I figure out how. I hope you persue the idea of a symposiun in 97.
What a GREAT start! Congratulations.
This is just the start of something wonderful. Hats off and a loud applause to Barbara Cox the mama ghote from the ghotesherd! Barbara, all of your herd sincerely thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Being from the Eastern Shore, it makes me proud to know that there are folks out there who recognize the Eastern Shore, a place rich in heritage and old fashion values. I look forward to growing with the Ghotes webpage! A special thanks to all others who were involved with this project! Aloha nui loa!
Great stuff. Could you add more information on the real natives that lived here?
An excellent job. This should help all the GHOTES. Thank you for this superb effort.
nice job jack this page is impressive
Yeaaaaah! GHOTES
My congrats to all who did this. A job well done!
And we'll get better from here.
Bob
This is very nice! All I need is more time to peruse it. Congrats
and applause to Jack, Thom, Barbara and Gilbert, whose hard drive we
hope enjoys quick resurrection.
APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! Love the page...Thanks to the GHOTES Team Captain, Barbara and her excellent advisors. Our ancestors would be proud of your work.
Hope you have enjoyed this GHOTES Web site.
