Charles Tillman Niblett (ctillman@att.net), Sun Sep 6 23:40:37 EDT 1998

I am looking for the parents of Edmund Niblett, found on the 1820 Census of Jones County Georgia. Wife was Anna who married Peter B. Cardell in Newton County, Georgia in March, 1827. This was after the death of Edmund. There was a William Niblett from the outer banks of MD, Worcester County, Revolutionary War veteran, whose son was William, who married and settled in Sussex County, VA, who was a veteran of the War of 1812. Their timing would fit the Edmund I am researching, but only after a period spent in South Carolina. Any help would be apreciated.

Don S. Mears (dsm@iamerica.net), Tue Sep 1 18:53:18 EDT 1998

Who are Littleton and Naomi MEARS? He was b.about 1736 and d.12-31-1776. No information on Naomi except that there is a Naomi Mears in 1810 Census of Bladen Co.,NC. They had the following children: 1. Kendall Mears b.about 1755 2. Levin Mears b. about 1758 3. Littleton Mears b.1760 d.11-7-1776 in Accomack Co.,VA 4. Severn Mears b.about 1765 5. Shadrack Mears b.about 1772 6. John E. Mears b.11-1-1834 d.12-16-1897 I have been researching Levin Mears b.about 1800 in Bladen Co.,NC. It is believed that his father's name was also Levin but there appears to be no Levin listed as Head of Household in 1800 Census. What's so interesting is that Naomi Mears is in 1810. Is it possible that the Levin Mears shown as 2.above is the father or perhaps grandfather of my Levin b.1800 in Bladen Co.,NC? If so, does anyone have additional information on Littleton and Naomi MEARS? Don S. Mears

There appears to be no Levin

Rob Hall (laien@aol.com), Thu Aug 13 12:59:05 EDT 1998

I am looking for any information on the families of the following:

1. Thomas Bonnawell who married Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of Abraham (d.1785) and Mary Taylor. They inherited land (Hap Hazzard and Hog Quarter) in Somerset Co. from her brother William, and sold it Dec. 20, 1808.

2. Thomas Bonnewell (d.1842) who married Nancy Tull (1803-c.1855). Nancy was the daughter of Samuel Tull and Nancy Byrd. The name later became Bonneville.

My suspicion (hope) is that these Bonne(a)wells slipped over the border from Accomack to Somerset.

Claudia Hughes Bramble (CBRAM23390@AOL), Wed Aug 12 12:37:26 EDT 1998

I have been trying to research the HUGHES Family from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. My Great Grandfather was Obediah Hughes. He was born in 1865 and died around 1938. He was married to Amelia Susan Poulson (Sunie) in 1886 and they are both buried in Wessels Cem. I have not been able to find any information on Obediah whatsoever and am not sure where to start looking for his records. We don't think he was born on the eastern shore, maybe Baltimore or New York?? My grandfather was Claude Hughes and my father was Elwood J. Hughes. Elwood was born in Mearsville, Virginia. Other names include Sturgis, Hart, and of course POULSON. Any information would be a help.

Also, are there any cemetary record lists for the Eastern shore of Virginia? Am looking for the Wessels Cemetary, one called Liberty and one in Onancock I do not have a name for.

RANDALL C. was either of ACCOMACK COUNTY VA or SOMERSET MARYLAND, his birth place is still undetermined. RANDALL was married to VIRGINIA C. TAYLOR (15 Dec 1814/23 Nov 1865), VIRGINIA was from ACCOMACK COUNTY VA. They were married on 27 Sept 1837. VIRGINIA'S sister ELIZABETH married WILLIAM GREEN who was RANDALLS best man in his marriage. VIRGINIA inherited an intrest in property her father owned and passed on to family members in his will. VIRGINIA, RANDALL, ELIZABETH and WILLIAM signed a release of ownership to the property and her brother became sole owner to the EASTERN SHORE land. After their marriage, RANDALL and VIRGINIA moved to ELIZABETH CITY COUNTY, VA where RANDALL is listed as head of household in the 1840 census. RANDALL and VIRGINIA had 4 children: WILLIAM J; GEORGE ARTHUR (our Great grandfather); RANDALL C. Jr and JOHN T. After RANDALLS deathe VIRGINIA moved the family to PORTSMOUTH (NORFOLK COUNTY)VA where she is shown as head of household in the 1860 census. From other information handed down, it's described that RANDALL went to live with a FRANCIS ONLEY of ACCOMACK COUNTY and his wife MARGARET as a child(death of parents???) and that RANDALL and GEORGE CUSTIS(1778/1843),(son of REVELL & CATHERINE CUSTIS) were cousins and that both recieved a legacy from FRANCIS ONLEY in his last will & testament(deed book 1828/46,pg.125 of ACCOMACK CO). RANDALL C. and VIRGINIA C.(TAYLOR) REVELL are buried in CEDAR GROVE CEMETARY in PORTSMOUTH VA................................. Ted Parks (padmin@tcsn.net), Mon Jul 20 04:47:48 EDT 1998

Hi, After reading the information posted on this site I have decided to finally get my family tree in order. On my paternal side I can trace the family back to Tangier. Around the turn of the century my Grandfather (Elmer Smith Parks b. Jan 1904) and his 4 brothers (Otis, Will,Frank, and Harrison) were born to Capt. Harrison Parks (b. 1877) and Ida May Smith (supposedly from Smith Island). I know that Capt. Parks ran the mail boat on Tangier for many years and his father was Ed Parks. This is where the trail gets cold for me. I am also told that someone in my family (Woody Parks) traced our lineage back to Europe many years ago. This information was supposedly passed on to Bill Parks. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to find him. Looking through the Miles files, Im left with the impression that Im bound to be tied into the Parks family that is there, but I cant find the connection. I am also interested in tracing back my fathers maternal side which consists of Evans, Hart, Johnson (going back to two full blooded Indians) and Garner. I am presently located in California, which makes it pretty hard to get over to the Shore to check things out. I am considering flying over, but I was wondering if someone there might be able to help.

Thanks for any help.

flo droll (adroll@aol.com), Sun Jul 19 22:35:29 EDT 1998

Am looking for information on the Coulbourne family and the Kelley Family from around Greenbackville. I know that my Great Grandfather was known as Bay Pop and Great Grandmother was known as Bay Mom. The had several children - one of which was my Grandmother Cece. Their other children were Lizzie, Maggie, Mary, William (Bud), Ada, Mildred and Bertha. I think my Great Grandfathers real name was Charles Courbourne and his wife's name may have been Zella.

Would also like information on my Father's father whose name was Elton R. Kelley. I know that he was run over by a train when he was transporting chickens to market. He was killed when my Father was about 16. I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters.

I am new at this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Terry Littleton (tlturbo@aol.com), Fri Jul 17 10:52:08 EDT 1998

Hello everyone, Quite a few of us are working on the LITTLETON family of Northampton and Accomack Counties. We are at a wall and I hope someone on here might be able to help us crack it. Most people working in this area have come across the Nathaniel and Southy Littletons. They owned a plantation on Nandua Creek in Accomack CO and acquired lots of property around the shore in VA and MD. For a quick update, we show Nathaniel had sons Edward and Southy, It appears Edward left no male descendants. Southy had quite a few kids; Nathaniel, Bowman, Ester, Sarah, Elizabeth, Gertrude, and another Southy. I found notes that Bowman 'died unmarried' but does this mean as a widower or never married? Nathaniel and Southy, Bowmans brothers, both had male children but notes for them also say 'died unmarried' or 'died s.p.' (what does this mean?) We need to know if there were any male descendants from any of these three Littletons. Also, has anyone found a reference between any of the Littletons and a plantation in Wicomico Co, MD called 'Pharsalia' or to any Littleton leaving for Onslow Co, NC? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Terry Littleton - tlturbo@aol.com

Tom Cozzens (TCozz57795@aol.com), Sun Jul 5 16:35:58 EDT 1998

Lower Accomac Co. Map on this site shows a Richard and Frances Holland. A Richard Holland witnessed will of George Crump in Accomac ca. 1667. Richard Holland on Titheables list about same time. I have a Richard Holland died 1696 in Somerset Co. MD, widow Frances. I believe this to be same family. I also show a Richard with wife Sarah having children in Annemessex Hundred, MD starting 1681. I believe these two are father and son and that Richard Sr. left Accomac to go to Somerset Co. about 1671. 1) My problem: who is Frances, Richard's spouse, married after 1648. Possibly a Chapman or O'Dewe based on will witnesses. 2) Who is Sarah, Richard #2's spouse, married about 1680. Possibly Sarah Crump? 3) Finally, who is Richard, born ca 1630, the son of, possibly Gabriell Holland of Jamestowne. This is a lot but the truth probably rests in Accomac Co., a long way from my home in Texas. Any contributions appreciated.

I queried GHOTES a good while back (about 18 months) about ESAW HENRY KELLAM. Esaw/Easor/Eazer/Esau, Kellam/Killam/Kellum. He was born in Accomac VA May 11, 1811 (may be as early as 1804, contradictory info exists). Married Caroline M Weatherford in AL,July 18, 1833, died in Monroe County AL April 20, 1872. There are numerous Esaw and Henry Kellams in the E VA area, haven't pinned one down as his father. Any hints out there? There were a couple of Kellams, Ismah and Willis who were supposed to have been born on Eastern shore, in the late 18th century and moved to AL, one may have been his father - no records. Any hints? I am palnning on being in Norflok in Juy, would like to see Accomac and Eastville courthouse records. It has been suggested that somebody in GHOTES might be amenable to guiding me through the records. That would be wonderful! Contact me.

Valda Shrimpton (vshrimpton@aol.com), Mon Apr 6 14:37:33 EDT 1998

Does anyone know anymore about WILLIAM SHRIMPTON who appears in a selection of short biographies taken from the introduction to County Court Records of Accomack-Northampton Virginia 1640-1645. It reads that in the 1640s William Burdett took care of the cattle inherited by WILLIAM SHRIMPTON from Lady Dale's estate on the eastern shore [Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, 111,129;Ames, County Court Records,144]. I know there were Shrimptons in Boston Massachusetts at this date, but no Williams so no obvious connection. My earliest references to Shrimptons in Virginia were both in the first half of the C18th and by coincidence two further Williams, one a child apprentice from London and one who was transported for being a highwayman. I don't know what happened to either in Virginia.

John H. Coats (jcoats5982@AOL.com), Thu Apr 2 10:58:29 EST 1998

I just spent a week on the eastern shore trying to find the parents of Priscilla Dorman who married Richardson Cade in Sussex County DE. I checked records at the archives in Dover, in Georgetown etc. but came up with absolutely no clue as to who Priscillas's parents were. I also checked at the research center in Salisbury. Priscilla died 17 Oct 1811 in Sussex county. Priscilla and Richardson had several of their children baptised in the Coolspring Presbyterian church in Sussex County. Richardson (Cade) died in 1796. I know a lot about the Dorman family starting with John Dorman in VA and the families in Somerset and Worchester counties MD but can't connect Priscilla . I have a feeling that the John Sheldon Dorman that was in Sussex county and a contemporary of Priscilla might have been closely related bnut have not proof of this. He married Mary Clowes. I can't connect John Sheldon to the other Dormans either. He did name a son Jeremiah so might be related to one of the Jeremiah Dormans.

Does anyone have a clue as to how Priscilla might fit into the Dorman family?

I have found there are other surnames such as Leatherbury, Fisher, Killmon, Marshall, Taylor, Corbin and Wessells. The family resided primarily in Atlantic, Accomack County Virginia and married other families from Worcester County Maryland. Some migrated to upstate New York. Family traits are red-hair, green, grey, hazel eyes. If anyone has any information, please respond. Some say this is a German-Jewish surname. Thank you.

My 9th great grandfather, John Fox, was supposedly aboard the Virginia Merchant, a ship bringing Caveliers fleeing Cromwell's Commonwealth in 1649. I have found references to this ship, and it's shipwreck in Accamack Co., but no mention of my ancester as a passenger. His son, Henry, married Ann West, granddaughter of Gov. John West. Can any one tell me where I might find John Fox's name as a passenger on the Virginia Merchant, and any thing about his life once upon these shores? I don't know if this info. is incorrect, so obvious that I'm missing it, or just plain difficult to find.

Beth Christ (crchrist@icanect.net), Wed Feb 4 21:35:53 EST 1998

I am researching the Sturgis family on the Maryland & Virginia Eastern Shore. I have read, with great interest, the information available here at GHOTES. It is a wonderful resource. However, I have a few missing links and wonder if anyone can help.

My grandfather was Paul Avery Sturgis, born in Girdletree, Md., near Snow Hill around 1901-09. He had a twin brother named Francis and was one of 12 children I am told. Some of his brothers and sisters were Marie, Mary, Harvey, Glenwood, Maurice and, of course, Francis. I do not know the names of any of the others. These named eventually moved to Wilmington, Delaware.

Paul Avery Sturgis married Ruth Marie Wickers, in Chestertown, MD. in 1929.

I do not know the name of Paul's mother or father. There are many known family relatives in Salisbury.

There are family trees here on the GHOTES pages and that I have found through other research, but I cannot find the link between the Virginia Sturgises and my grandfather. I'm sure there is a real easy connection to be made if I only knew any name from the generation prior to Paul Avery Sturgis.

If there's anyone who has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them. Once I can make the connection, I can post my family tree and perhaps help someone else with their family tree.

'Hope to hear from someone soon.

Beth Christ

Kennis Austin (kenann@dmv.com), Wed Jan 28 10:49:44 EST 1998

I have recently restarted my efforts to trace my family roots. What information I have already gathered is from a deceased cousin as well as records from the Accomack county courthouse and the Norfork city public library(census records). My family name, Wallop, is traced back at least to my great great grandfather, Edward Wallop, who was sold as a slave at an auction in front of what is now Horntown United Methodist Church. However, I have reached a dead end and am not sure how to proceed. I do know that the Wallop family were landowners in the northern Accomack county area whence the name Wallops Island. Could the church have any records of slaves that were sold here? Many of the remaining white decendants of the Wallops are deceased. Where do I proceed from here? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Kennis Austin

I am researching my family ancestry which I have researched back into Virginia with the last record I have is for a William Prowell who joined the Virginia Volunteers in 1775. He fought on the western front and in North Carolina. I found that he was born in Fauquier County Virginia. Now the reason that I am writing, I came across a tax rent record dated 1704 for a Charles Pywell in Accomack, Virginia. Is there a way that I could get a correct spelling of this name or at least a photocopy of the actual document so I could check the spelling. Since this was a tax rent for 150 acres of land, would you by any chance have a way of checking to see if there are other records on this Charles. I would appreciate any help that you can give me in my quest for researching my family.

Elizabeth Forrest (eforrest@ptd.net), Sat Dec 27 10:32:41 EST 1997

My mother is interested in any information that might be available about Elijah Linton who died in 1796 in Somerset County, MD with widow Sophia. He owned Spring Island in the Chesapeake Bay and left it to his family. We do not know how he came to own Spring Island unless it may have been left to him by Eastern Shore relatives. He is contemporary with Nathan Linton, Sr,, perhaps a cousin.

Could trade information on Evans family who moved to Western Shore of Chespeake Bay.
