I am looking for information about John Samuel RUSSELL, married to Mary SCHRIEVES. Their dates of birth are unknown to me, but their son, Samuel Tilton RUSSELL, was born 25 Jan 1879 in Parksley, Accomack, VA. Samuel Tilton RUSSELL is my Great Grandfather through his oldest child, Bertie Elinor RUSSELL Ward, my grandmother.I am wondering if Mary RUSSELL, daughter of John T. RUSSELL of Hunting Creek, married 16 March 1892 to William A. BARNES, son of John BARNES of Hunting Creek, could be part of the RUSSELL family I am searching. A 1952 news article I came across in my grandmother's, Bertie E. RUSSELL WARD, things. It listed many of Mary RUSSELL and William A. BARNES' children living at that time, 1952, in Parskley, VA. The article also mentioned a Lillie RUSSELL married to Tony MIDDLETON, as having shared a double wedding ceremony with Mary and William. If there are any answers out there, please contact me. Sincerely, Boyd J. Christiansen. I reside in the Salt Lake City, UT, area.

I have been researching the Stollings/Stallings family lines

my family line goes back to Richard Stallings who settled in MD

Nicholas Stallings Jr. or Sr. and possible to Daniel Stallings
of Jamestown. Do you have any further information on this family?

Also, I wonder if anyone can tell me if salvery was a common practice on the eastern shore during the 18th and 19th centuries? If so did slaves often take the lsat name of their masters?

KELLAM/KELLUM
I am looking for the parents of Riley Kellum, my 3rd great-grandfather.
Riley Kellum was born circa 1795 in NC, and served in a NC Regiment during the War of 1812. He married China Segraves on May 20, 1816, in Wake County, NC. His son Smith Kellum was born circa 1817 in NC. Riley was given land in Alabama for his service in the War of 1812, and he and his family moved to Bibb County, AL in the 1820s. Riley moved to Mississippi after 1840, where he lived until his death in the 1860s. Smith Kellum, now an adult, remained in Alabama. After Riley's death, China retuned to Alabama, where she lived until her death.
Given that Riley Kellum named his son Smith Kellum, I believe that he is connected to one of the Smith Kellums living in Accomack or Northampton County, VA during the 18th century. I believe that there is a strong possibility that Riley is related to Smith Kellum [b. circa 1739, VA], son of Moses Kellum [b. circa 1718, VA; d. 1773, Northampton County, VA]. Whitelaw's history of Virginia's Eastern Shore indicates that Smith Kellum inherited from his father Moses Kellum in 1773. According to Whitelaw, Smith and his wife Mary later moved to North Carolina. During the 1790s, a Smith Kellum was mentioned in several deeds in NC.
Moses Kellum's will was probated in Northampton County, VA on December 14, 1773. Moses is identified as a planter of Hungars Parish. He left half his land to his son Smith Kellum, and the other half to his daughter Luraner (?). If his son and daughter died without issue, Moses left his remaining estate to his brother Benjamin Kellum and his brother Solomon Kellum's children.
I am interested in corresponding with others who are researching the Kellum family, and in exchanging information. I look forward to hearing from you.

I have Bradford, Johnson, Tignor, Miles, Hope and many more lines
in Accomack- all on my mother's side. The # 1 question I have is
who were the parents of William S. Hope??? He was born in 1814 in
Acc. and died in 1894 in Pocomoke. He married Margaret Jane Miles.
He was my gggrandfather. He was not the Wm. S. who was born later and
may have been the nephew of my Wm. S. My cousins and I have been
looking for the parents of our Wm.S.- could they have been George Hope
and Nancy Taylor who married in 1811? Does anyone out there know for
sure?
And I would be happy to hear from any Hope cousins from any of the
lines.
Thanks, Carole

Ooops! I posted the last entry and I got to thinking. I believe I was wrong about my ggrandmothers maiden name. I beleive it was Rose Gladden Bell. My great uncle(?) Robert Gladden just held a reunion this past summer that I attended and got a lot of rich history. If anyone knows Robert Gladden of Marsh Field, feel free to let him know that I am online and would love to hear from him. I beleive he has throngs of history connected with the shore. Thanks, Tim

Good Day,
My name is Timothy Alan Savage and both sides of my family come from the shore. I am considering moving back to my fathers new home that I am in the process of building(slowly but surely) at Willis Wharf.
My mother was a Bell (Phyllis Leigh) and my father is a Savage (Dize).
My mothers grandparents, my Nanny and Pop, were Lloyd Bell and Rose Carpenter Bell of Red Bank. My fathers parents are Edward Savage and Gladys Whaley Savage of Exmore. Please add my name where appropiate. I am interested in any tidbits that anyone can provide. I think I am related to just about everyone on the Shore! LOL Thanks in advance, Tim

I have traced my Corbin ancestry back to a George Corbin who immigrated to the ESVA between 1750 and 1790. He may have been married to Grace Savage (daughter of Capt. John savage, son of Thomas Savage) and/or Susannah DuParks (widow of Peter DuParks). I am seeking to find when he arrived on the ESVA, where he lived, where he originated from in England or elsewhere, and who were his parents, ancestors, etc. Anybody out there know anything? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Mac.

My ggggrandfather was William Laws and I understand he was the first pastor at Modest Town Baptist Church. After he passed away, his children moved to IL, MO, OK and ARK. I don't know if there are any LAWS left in Accomac now or if anyone can tell me if the original Modest Town Church is still standing. My great-aunt's maiden name was Eleanora Satchell, she had one brother whose name was Jessie Satchell and her mothers maiden name was Mary Russell. Who later married a Satchell, then a Brown upon his death and relocated to Portsmouth, VA. She told me that her grandmother worked as a cook in a jail located on the eastern shore. I am estimating the time period to have been in the early 1900's. Her grandmother's name was possibly Rebecca Russell. My question is was there a jail located on the eastern shore? and where could I find any information concerning those who were employed there.

I have a group photo taken somewhere on the Shore in, I would think, the end of the 1800's judging from the clothing worn. I believe it might be in front of a church. There's a small frame one-story building with about 20 adults standing and a couple dozen children seated, in front. In the foreground is a young man who appears to be a minister kneeling down. I have tried to get information on this group but no luck so far, so I am hoping maybe there are GHOTES that might recognize it from my description. Not much to go on but I am stilll hoping! Our relatives were from both Accomack and Northampton counties on the Shore - Bulls and Downings. Any suggestions? Many thanks mary

I am looking for information on the publishing company called

I have a very old antique family bible that has been passed down to me and it doesn't appear to have a date when it was published. I received it from my father who is 90 years old and he received it many years ago as a gift from a very elderly lady for whom he had done chores. This had apparently been in her family for many years before she passed it on to my father. I am trying to determine approx. when this bible was printed and it's value. Any info on the John E. Potter & Company publishers would be greatly appreciated. Such as the year of their inception and are they still publishers today or if not, when did they close down, etc. Anything at all would be most appreciated. I live in London, Ontario Canada.

Does anyone have information on the BLADES surname in Accomack County, Va.? I have a Robert Blades there in July 1666, a John Blades and William Blades arriving in the County in 1652. ARTHUR K. SMITH
(ASmith8811@aol.com), Wed Jan 20 00:39:19 EST 1999
My name is Arthur Smith (Eugene, Madison, Daniel, Ezekiel Francis, Ezekiel, Capt.Aaron Smith). Capt Aaron was married to Elizabeth Carraway. She was the daughter of John Carraway IV and Margaret Keeling of Princess Anne Co., Va. I am trying to find the parents of Capt. Aaron Smith. I have information that indicates that his parents may be Tully Robinson Smith and Francis Unknown of Accomack County. Tully Robinson Smith is the son of George Smith Jr. and grandson of Dr. George Smith and Elizabeth Robinson. His mother was West Robinson daughter of Col. Tully Robinson and Sarah West. Francis (the wife of Tully Robinson Smith) had a William Keeling and his wife as witness to her will and William Keeling as executor. This suggests that she may have been a Keeling. My problem is that the only children that I have found for Tully Robinson and Francis are Elizabeth Smith, Francis Smith, and Susannah Smith, no Aaron Smith.
Do any of you old Ghotes have any information on the descendants of Tully Robinson Smith or on any Smith who could be the parent of Capt. Aaron Smith? One source claims that Capt Aaron Smith had a number of brothers and that all of them had biblical names. Looks like Tully Robinson Smith may have had all girls and no Aaron. If so forget the Tully Robinson Smith line.
It has also been claimed that Capt. Aaron Smith is the son of a John Smith and a Francis Keeling. If this be so then could he be the John Smith who was a witness to the will of John Wise on September 20, 1741, (Nottingham wills and abstracts of Accomack County page 124)?
I am interested in any Smith line that may be connected to the Carraway or Keeling families of Princess Anne County. Take up the challenge and try to find a John Smith or a Tully Smith who could be the parent of Capt. Aaron Smith born about 1720.

I have a Crockett geneology website at http://members.tripod.com/~clemmie/index.html
Even though I have only found information back to my great grandfather,
Earl Smythe Crockett b. 1985 Alexandria, VA, I am convinced he can be traced
back to Tangier Island. I have met a few Tangier Crocketts and they are twins
to people in my family. Since I cannot find anything linking my great-grandfather,
I thought I's try working from Tangier to him. I have several questions based on
this: 1. Was Joseph Crockett the first Crockett on Tangier? 2.) If his grandfather
was named John TYLER where did the CROCKETT name come from and what was his father
Sampsons surname? 3. Is there a genealogy of Joseph Crockett that I can view?
4. Does anyone know when the first Crocketts appeared in Virginia? 5. Where there
Crocketts in any of the first settlements of Virginia?

I have a gggrandfather named Powhatan Cromwell, b. Nov. 26, 1824, I don't know where. Married Martha Oliver Jan. 03, 1850, Anderson County, KY. Died April 06, 1898, Georgia City, Jasper County, Missouri.
Assuming he may have Native American blood, I would like to locate the Indian village called Powhatan (Henrico) as a starting point.
In what county was it located.

I am looking for my grandfathers mother. His name was George William Bailey. His death certificate states he was born on March 20, 1876 in Accomack. I heard as a child that he was adopted but have learned that his adoptive father was his biological father (Edward C. Bailey). There were three boys born to this woman by three different men. One half brother was Wm Sidney Finley. George Bailey's adoptive mother was Sarah Elliott White Bailey daughter of George Elliott. I do not find my grandfather in the census records, birth records or land records. I do find him in the Portsmouth City Directory in 1932. If there is anyone who could help me find my grandfather's mother I would appreciate it. Thanks, Ann

PINN FAMILY- My ancestors were the Pinn's of Northumberland and Lancaster County Virginia. They were Native Americans and lived along Indian Creek in Lancaster County about 1733. I believe some of my ancestors including Robert Pinn I [1710-1760)may be buried along Indian Creek in Lancaster County. He belonged to Wicomico Parish Church in Northumberland which means he was Christian and they may also have records. The Pinn's now live all over Virginia and Maryland but most trace their ancestry to Northumberland County.
I would like to trade information with anyone researching the Pinn family of Northumberland and Lancaster County. Please contact me if you have any information regarding my ancestors.

I am looking for Congrove/Congreve records in VA or WVA from 1800-1700 or earlier. My ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. William Congreve/Congrove was born in 1752. William and his children migrated to Ohio in the early 1800's. I believe William Congreve or his family came to VA from Maryland. However, there are records in New York, in the 17th century of Congreve's being born there as well. No proof of a connection has been made to the New York branch. Anyone that can tell me something about the Congreve/Congrove family in New York, Maryland, Virginia, or Ohio would be most helpful..

Does anyone posses any information on this man. My Joseph was said to have had a father named Edward...awfully close to Edmund.
Any ideas?
