RILEY BYRD
Riley F. Byrd son of Daniel T. and Rhoda Riggen BYRD, was born in Accomack Co., VA on 10 Febuary 1830 (Miles M. K. and Barry W., Miles Files, http://www.esva.net/ghotes/, (hereafter cited as Miles, M. K., & Barry W., Miles Files).
He married Sarah Robinson WESSELLS on 25 October 1852 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman, Nora Miller, Marriage Records p 52). Sarah was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1831. Sarah died before 19 January 1864. (See below)
He married Josephine A. Toulson on 19 January 1864 in Somerset County, MD (Pollitt, Roy C., Somerset County Marriage Records 1796-1871 (Prince George, VA: Old Somerset House, 1986), p 21 (hereafter cited as Pollitt, Roy C., Somerset Marriages 1796-1871). Reily F. Byrd and Josephine Toulsin, 19 January 1864.
Josephine was born circa 1844 (Barnes, John C., Somerset 1870 Census). In 1870 she was Schoolteacher on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden, Leslie., Families of Smith's Island (Unpublished. Copy at Salisbury State Research Center), p 9 (hereafter cited as Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith).
Riley F. Byrd was emumerated in the 1870 Somerset County Census. (Barnes, John C., Somerset 1870 Census). An abstract reads: "Riley Byrd 40 schoolteacher, Josephine 26 schoolteacher, Charles E. 4." In 1870 he was Schoolteacher on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden, Leslie., Families of Smith's Island (Unpublished. Copy at Salisbury State Research Center), p 9 (hereafter cited as Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith). Riley died in December 1904. Interment was in Byrd Cemetery Muddy Creek, VA (Miles, M. K., & Barry W., Miles Files).

1 i. John W. BYRD was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1855 (Ibid.).
2 ii. Anna S. BYRD was born in Accomack Co., VA in 1855 (Accomack County Deaths, Accomack County Court House, Accomac, VA. (hereafter cited as Accomack County Deaths, 1853-1896). Anna died on 1 May 1856 (Ibid.). The record states: "Anna S. Byrd, 8 months old, daughter of Riley Byrd, died 1 May 1856, father gave information."

4 iv. [-----] BRYD was born in Accomack Co., VA on 15 March 1876 (Accomack County Deaths, 1853-1896). The record states: stillborn infant of Riley and Josephine.

John H. SMITH was born in New York in 1850 (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries). John applied for a marriage license to wed Pamelia-Amelia Miles MARSHALL on 8 May 1870 in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 288).
He married Pamelia-Amelia Miles Marshall, the widow of Gilbert Marshall, (Accomack Co. Marriages, 1854-1896). about 8 June 1870 in Somerset County, MD (Ibid., p 288). Pamelia-Amelia was born on Saxis, VA circa 1838 (Scherzinger, Patricia., Accomack County Virginia 1850 Census (Bowie MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1988), p 38 (hereafter cited as Scherzinger, Patricia, Accomack 1850 Census). She was the daughter of Parker and Ann Tyler MILES. She married first Gilbert MARSHALL on 5 October 1854 in Accomack Co., VA. It was a religious ceremony at the residence of Sam'l Jester (Accomack Co. Marriages, 1854-1896). Pamelia-Amelia died on 24 November 1911. She was buried at Union UME Church, Tylerton MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 131). (NOTE: The true birth year of Amelia will never be known. Tombstone 1911-83=1828. 1850 Census 1850-12=1838. 1st marriage 1854-21=1833. 1860 Census 1860-23=1837. 2nd marriage 1870-20=1850. 1870 Census 1870-30=1840. 1880 Census 1880-40=1840. Because of the above information a circa birth year of 1838 was given.)

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. SI HH7 Fly11 John H. Smith 30, sailor, NY, NY, NY, Amelia, 40, VA, VA, VA, Ruth A. 20, VA, VA, VA, Mary L. 19, VA, VA, VA, Rachel E. 9, MD, NY, VA, Rosa F. 5, MD, NY, VA, Maggie E. 2, MD, NY, VA.
John died in 1923. He was buried at Union UME Church, Tylerton MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 132).
Gilbert and Pamelia-Amelia Miles MARSHALL had the following children:

2 ii. Ruth A. MARSHALL was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1858 (Ibid., p 48). Ruth was listed in the household of Gilbert MARSHALL in the 1860 Census in Accomack Co., VA. Ruth was listed as a daughter in John H. SMITH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.
3 iii. Mary L. MARSHALLwas born in Accomack Co., VA in 1863 (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 27). Mary was listed as a daughter in John H. SMITH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.
She married William J. BROWN on 22 May 1900 in Somerset County, MD. They obtained a license (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 290). William was born in Ireland circa 1855.
Mary was listed as William J. BROWN's wife on the 1920 Census on Smith's Island, Maryland. Mary died in 1934 (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 27).
John H. and Pamelia-Amelia Miles Marshall SMITH had the following children:
1 i. Rachel Emily SMITH was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 3 June 1872 (State of Maryland, Death Certificate). Census Information. Conflicting evidence states that Rachel was born in 1870 on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 94). Rachel was listed as a daughter in John H. SMITH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.
She married John F. MARSH on 8 May 1889 in Somerset County, MD. It was a religious ceremony at an undisclosed place (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 288). John was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 2 July 1866 (Evans, Jennings L., Walczyk, Frank V., & Gail M., Graven Inscriptions of Tylerton (Coram, NY: Gail M. Walcyzk, to be published Spring 1999), (hereafter cited as Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). He was the son of David A. and Margaret Evans MARSH. John died on 29 March 1898. He was buried at Union UME Church, Tylerton MD (Ibid.).
In 1890 Rachel and John F. MARSH had Lena MARSH on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.). Circa 1893 Rachel and John F. MARSH had Ervin Colie MARSH on Smith's Island, Maryland (.; Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 30). Circa 1895 Rachel and John F. MARSH had Blanche MARSH on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid., p 30). Rachel, and John's daughter Lena married John L. TYLER circa 1908. Rachel was listed as a mother-in-law in John L. TYLER's family on the 1920 Census in Somerset County, MD. Rachel died 27 July 1944. pulmonary tuberculous Union UME Church, Tylerton MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries, p 93. State of Maryland, Death Certificate).
2 ii. Rose E. SMITH was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 4 November 1875 (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 36). Rose was listed as a daughter in John H. SMITH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.
3 iii. Noah Edward SMITH was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 9 November 1878 (State of Maryland, Death Certificate). He married Leona LANDON on 28 Dec 1898 in Somerset County, MD. It was a religious ceremony (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 426). Leona was born in 1881 (Ibid., p 426). Circa 1899 Noah and Leona had Helen SMITH.
In February 1900 Noah and Leona had Ina SMITH. Circa 1903 Noah and Leona had Julia SMITH. Circa 1905 Noah and Leona had Gertrude SMITH. Noah was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Somerset County, MD. Noah died on 28 April 1972. pneumonia Crisfield Cemetery, Crisfield MD (State of Maryland, Death Certificate).
4 iv. Maggie Elizabeth SMITH was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 20 November 1878 (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 36). Maggie was listed as a daughter in John H. SMITH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.
She married Samuel T. MARSHALL on 29 March 1897 in Somerset County, MD. They obtained a license (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 425). Samuel was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 14 November 1877. He was the son of William A. and Margaret A. Tyler MARSHALL. Samuel died on 21 June 1911.
