Meet our Faculty...Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez

A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Juan Carlos came to the U.S. in 1986.  He received his MFA and BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), School for American Crafts and is currently an Associate Professor in the Metals Department at RIT.  Public art projects include the creation of several large sculptures and benches.  Publications include Niche Magazine (2006), Metalsmith Magazine (2003), Craft & Art Magazine, and 500 Bracelets by Lark Books.
3 day course: Forging, Soldering & Fabrication

This workshop will focus on the creation of jewelry and metal objects.  A variety of fabrication techniques will be utilized and taught, including scoring, bending, and the use of dapping tools among others.  Students will learn and try various soldering techniques and forming thin metal in the construction of small objects and structures for jewelry making.

All levels.

2 day course: Surface Techniques: Texture and Metal Surface Embellishment

During the course of this workshop students will explore and compare various surfaces and texturing techniques for the creation of jewelry and metal objects.  Students will create and develop surface blocks, chasing tools and texture hammers, and learn different techniques for use.  Also, students will explore various finishing techniques, opening the door to a great variety of aesthetic possibilities to enhance ideas for design considerations.

All levels.

Student Materials and Tools Needed:
Basic hand tools
Basic set of pliers
Files: needle and 4" or 6"
Saw frame & blades: 0/2, 0/3, 0/4, etc.
Burnisher
Dust Mask
Scribers
Metric calipers
Hammers - goldsmith, planishing, crosspeen, etc.
Old inexpensive hammers for making texturing tools
Hand vise
Flux:  non-flouride recommended
Safety glasses
Sketchbook and pencil
Sand paper
Metal ruler
Gold or silver 20g sheet: 6" x 6" or more
Gold or silver 8g or 10g round or square wire: 8" to 10" or more
Solder: high, medium & low temp.
Students should bring whatever flex shaft attachments they desire: grinding wheels, cutting wheels, polishing, stone setting burs, hard burs, etc.
Optional: stones, gems, other metals, etc.
