Crocheting with Fine Wire, Joan Dulla

Enjoy being able to take your "work" with you.  You will learn the basic to advanced techniques of "crocheting" wire, from the single stitch tubular form - from which you can make tube, to the double stitch used for chains for necklaces or pendants, to the more advanced free form -which you can go sculptural.  Using this unique method of "knitting" using crochet hook with silver, copper wire and niobium wire, the class will consist of an introduction of the "knitting" technique and demonstrations of the single stitch, double stitch, chain making, and bead forms.  Also included will be addition of beads to your work, plus a demonstration of anodizing niobium.  Students will leave with samples of all the various stitches and techniques.

Materials fee - $75
Instructor will supply ALL materials and tools needed for class.  See Joan Dulla's page for complete details (link at top of page).

Altered metal Jewelry – Forged, Stacked and Stitched, Mary Hettmansperger

Using Copper and Silver sheeting; students will burn, fold, wrap, forge, cut, patina, and simply alter the surfaces to achieve amazing and innovative results. The sheeting will be the basis for much of the jewelry produced during the 3 day workshop.  Students will learn to use a propane torch to do simple torch fire enameling techniques and apply heat and achieve many surface results.  Cutting, folding and pre-planning will be covered to allow students to see the process of designing jewelry.

Alternative connections using stitching and creative cold connections will be covered along with using Commercial connections, such as nuts and bolts, eyelets, brads, jump rings, and rivets. Students will learn a variety of cold connections and their possibilities and will find endless opportunities to use simple products in jewelry design.  Nature’s objects, architectural elements, and personal imagery will be used as studies, to be interpreted into jewelry, by the individual’s creative voice.  Students are encouraged to bring personal items to use in their pieces and create one of a kind pieces.  Students will bring their own materials from a list that instructor provides and she will have additional items available. Please see further details on instructor's page (see link above).

Designing with Pearls, Tom McCarthy

Pearls have been used in jewelry for a very long time.  Come learn the numerous ways to
incorporate them into your work.  We will discuss types of pearls and make pearl settings; we’ll learn to string them and create pearl chains with wire.  We will half drill them and enlarge the holes of predrilled pearls.  By the end of the week you will begin to think of each new piece of jewelry as a pearl opportunity!

See instructor's page (linked above) for a list of tools and supplies you should bring.

In order to have the students be the most productive, Pauline will supply a materials kit that gives students the materials per project.  See instructor's page (linked above) for a list of tools and supplies you should bring. Materials Fee: The cost is $ 75.00 and that includes silver.

Woven Fiber Jewelry – twined, coiled, looped and stitched, Mary Hettmansperger

Copper, Silver, and craft wires will be used to stitch, weave, twine, loop, knot, coil, connect and embellish the many pieces of jewelry made during the 2 day class.  A variety of weaving and fiber techniques will be incorporated into many of the pieces.  Small gauge wires allow students to easily master the techniques with impressive results using simple stitching and fiber techniques, chain mail, wirework, and wire connections.  Larger gauge wires will often be a part of the designs and in this week students will become very comfortable in a variety of applications utilizing wire.

Found objects will be used as both altered art and the base for woven forms. Bottle caps, small antique items, coins, and old jewelry can all be reused and reclaimed into new found pieces of jewelry.  Students are encouraged to bring a variety of their own collected treasures to use during the week.

Rocks, Pods, bark, found glass, and small sticks will become an intricate part of some of the jewelry.  Some items will be the base, for which we will weave a surface skin, encase it, or alter it into a new form.  Rocks, small pieces of bark shells and other gifts from nature, can be incorporated into the pieces, making each personal and unique.

Students will bring their own materials from a list and instructor will have additional materials available.  Details on instructor's page (see link above).

We will cover fabrication techniques that take us away from flat surfaces.  We will  be making beads to quickly explore ideas but the concepts presented are applicable to any scale of work.  This will make your jewelry more inviting and visually dynamic.

See instructor's page (link above) for tools and supplies needed.

Hydraulic Press Formed Bracelets, Pauline Warg

Wonderful convex bangles and cuff bracelets can be formed on the hydraulic press in unique ways. The hydraulic press is a method of applying thousands of pounds of pressure to a piece of sheet metal while a soft urethane insert compresses vertically to stretch the metal horizontally. There is some amount of spontaneity in form through this process.
Although there is such extreme pressure applied to the metal, it is distributed in such a way that pre textured sheet metal will remain textured through the process.
Texturing, lap soldered seams and making cuffs from formed metal will all be covered.
See instructor's page (linked above) for a list of tools and supplies you should bring.

Materials and tool fee: $ 30.00  Should students want to use sterling silver or fine silver they can purchase Pieces 9" x 2" x 18g on their own or from Pauline ( Please order in advance )
