County Administrator

The Northampton County Administrator is Katherine H. Nunez. Katherine (Katie) assumed official responsibilities as County Administrator on October 3, 2005. Originally from the Beckley, West Virginia, area she graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana with a bachelor of arts in History with a minor in Secondary Education. Having served as the Executive Secretary (comparable to a Virginia Town Manager) for the town of Oak Bluffs on the island of Martha's Vineyard and most recently as the Town Administrator of Ashburnham, Massachusetts, Katie has valuable administrative experience in both a rural and a coastal setting.

Appointed by the Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator is the Chief Administrative Officer of the County and is responsible for the implementation and execution of policies established by the Board. In addition to daily administrative duties, the County Administrator is also responsible for the development of the annual budget, recommends service delivery and policy implementation, provides an operational framework under which County employees work, and ensures that all affairs of the County are carried out in an effective and responsible manner. The County Administrator also serves as the Director of Civil Defense. Additionally the County Administrator oversees the Northampton County portion of the Enterprise Zone, a regional economic incentive program with the County of Accomack. Operating under the direct supervision of the County Administrator is the Assistant to the County Administrator as well as the legislative department heads

Mission

The mission of Northampton County Local Government is to provide the necessary services to protect the health, safety, welfare, environment, and quality of life of our citizens consistent with the communities' values and priorities. This mission is accomplished by encouraging citizen involvement, preserving the County's fiscal stability, traditional values and unity of our people through the implementation of effective and efficient government programs; consensus building; managing the County's natural, cultural, and historic resources; planning for the future; and representing citizen needs and desires to other levels of government.

Administration Goals

The Departments of Northampton County are dedicated to achieving, under the leadership of the County Administrator, the goals set forth by the Board of Supervisors; to provide efficient, effective, equitable services to our citizens and visitors.

  • Develop financial plan to enhance community by providing quality of life and safe environment.
  • Invigorate economic viability while preserving natural resources and tranquil lifestyle.
  • Maintain reasonable tax structure by balancing needs with available resources.
  • Main a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to address capital expenditures for infrastructure and required services.
  • Promote accountable, responsive local government with efficiency and effectiveness.
