Hopefully all activities and times will remain as scheduled.

SEPTEMBER xth AND xth

SPECIAL EVENTS

The 2008 Onancock Harborfest is shifting a bit more of the fun towards the kids!  This year brings an expanded set of activities.  We will have the always popular face painting by Carol Crockett, as well as animal balloon talents of Shane Kio.  The Kids Craft Tent (sponsored by Runninger’s Pharmacy) will feature lots of unique craft items, including coloring some fun wooden cars and planes, sand art jewelry and bead jewelry, to name just a few.  New this year is triangles of cloth for the kids to demonstrate their artistic Posterwhimsy.  The colored pieces will be sewn into a quilt with the assistance of one of our favorite Town residents, Kate McCourt.  The completed quilt will then be on display in the Town Office for all to enjoy, so make sure your little artists contribute to this timeless project.  We’ve also got some great games lined up, with ribbons and prizes awarded.  The Moon Walk, Rock Climbing Wall and Slip ‘N Slide (sponsored by Onancock Building Supply and T & W Block) offer additional fun, as well as arcade games courtesy of Village Amusements.  There is definitely something for everyone, so don’t miss out on the fun!

With the help of partial sponsorship by Davis Disposal, we’ve been lucky enough to obtain Tournament Sanctioning from the American Armsport Association for this year’s Arm Wrestling Tournament, which means winners get State-wide recognition!  With us again this year is National Arm Wrestling Champion, John Thornes, who has earned impressive titles in East Coast, Virginia State, North Carolina State and Tennessee State Championships.   Mr. Thornes has ranked in the Top 4 in the Nation four times in the last six years!  We are very fortunate to have Mr. Thornes’ expertise and enthusiasm for this fast growing sport.  The tournament will feature several different weight classes, as well as a women’s division, and promises to be even more successful than last year.  Even if you don’t want to participate, this is a great event to watch.  We’ve relegated the stage for the tournament to afford a better view of the competition to avoid the “can’t see” crowd we had in 2007.

Of course, the unique and varied vendor booths will be available for those who prefer to stroll and enjoy.  We’ve got a variety of seafood offerings, some good old fashioned barbeque items, pizza and much more.  There will be some interesting booths to tickle your interest while you stroll by the gorgeous antique car show brought to us courtesy of Davis Auto.  Make sure to catch the kayak/canoe race from SouthEast Expeditions, which will take place at 10:00 am.

The fast growing Critter Parade is scheduled for 10:30. Horseshoe tournaments will also be featured, with two different time slots, 11:00 am and 1:30 pm, so make sure you register for one.  Hospice will entertain us with the Rubber Duck Race at 2:30 pm.  Sponsorship provided by Wendy’s and Suntrust Bank will allow one and all to show off their creativity in the Great Big Paper Boat Race to be held at 3:00 pm.

We’re lucky to have snagged Power Play for our Friday night entertainment, courtesy of sponsorship from Verizon, so don’t miss out on that!  On Saturday, DJ “Chuck D” will be on hand, courtesy of Marker 29 Produce, to keep us entertained during the day, with a remote broadcast done by Max 92.5 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.  Of course, the always beautiful Boat Bash (sponsored by Williams Funeral Home) will be held Saturday night between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm, so you can enjoy the wonderful music of the Almost Famous Band (sponsored by Merrill Lynch/Chris Doyle) while watching the colorful display.   New this year is the Shore’s very own E.J.Johnson, who many of us know from local clubs, to entertain us with his open mike/karaoke from 4:30 to 7:30.

For our raffle and auction this year, we have some wonderful items.  Gift certificates from local restaurants and other businesses, as well as some beautiful baskets made up special from area stores and galleries, make up for some raffle items not to be missed.  Raffle tickets are only $2.00 a piece, so make sure you grab a bundle to increase your chances at these great items.  While it is not necessary to be present to win, we do ask that you make every effort to do so.  This year’s auction will again provide some unique and beautiful pieces and prints from Shore artists, such as Turner Sculpture, Willie Crockett Print, Copper Creations, Bill Crockett, Robert Swain & Jack Richardson Gallery and the top 3 poster contest winning entries.  Don’t miss out on the chance to get into the bidding action for these one of a kind art works.
