Ken Smith (ken@libronix.com), Wed Oct 9 16:29:34 EDT 2002

My wife's great-grandfather was Theodore Thomas Belote (d. 1951). We have very little family history on him, but we believe he grew up on the Eastern Shore. He was a curator at the Smithsonian Museum. If anyone has information about his parents or siblings, please let me know.

Best regards,

Ken Smith Burlington, WA

Nelson W. Cannon (BRCNWC@aol.com), Tue Oct 8 22:10:08 EDT 2002

I am looking for information on (ZACHARIAH) SACKER NELSON born in the early 1700s in Cape Henry, VA. He married Betty (possibly a KING) and lived on Fox Island, Tangier Sound, VA. Their son, THOMAS "KING" NELSON (1752-1853) married GRACE STERLING (daughter of John and Betsy TODD Sterling). He is buried at Jenkins Creek. Then their son, THOMAS NELSON (1797-1865) married NANCY COX TAWS (1797-1876); he died in Lawsonia, Somerset Co.,MD.
I would like to know the dates of birth and death for SACKER NELSON and BETTY.
Also information on their parents.
Does anyone know if there is a connection between Sacker Nelson and Thomas Nelson of Yorktown, VA?

Thanks for your help,
Nelson W. Cannon

Looking for information about PETER C TAYLOR found in the 1860 Census in Pungoteague, farmer, born circa 1830. Spouse Sally B, children Sally B and Edward B. Family story goes that he took his family from that area during the Civil War after military seized property and sailing vessel, going to Phila and eventually New York. Leaning toward him being the right person as father of Edward because of age tying in with descendants of an Edward of Brooklyn, NY. TIA to anyone who might be so kind to respond. Charlotte

Sara Elizabeth Kennedy (lunacat76@hotmail.com), Mon Sep 2 02:25:11 EDT 2002

I am looking for info on the CHESSER family from ASSAWOMAN. My gggrandfather was Purnell Houton Chesser, and his daughter Carrie Chesser Kennedy is my ggrandmother. They were from there. Carrie had a brother Ramey who had a twin sister, Esther. They all had very dark coloring, and were of Native American decent, but no one ever spoke about it. My grandfather was Carrie Chesser Kennedy's son- Purnell Chesser Kennedy. I have the piano that was shipped down the intercoastal from Assawoman when they relocated to Florida around 1900. They settled in Vero Beach, FL, where my grandfather was born. Our family has been there every since. Purnell Houton Chesser, Carrie Chesser Kennedy, and my grandfather are buried in the Winter Beach Cemetery, north of Vero Beach. I know some Chesser relatives still live near Assawoman, I think they grow sweet potatos or soy beans? I think one is an award winning decoy duck carver. I want to know what tribe my family is from, and how far back did they loose contact with the tribe. Maybe the Assateague Indians? Is anyone else related to them? Thanks!!

Bob Steele (pbsteele@mm.com), Sat Aug 31 10:40:37 EDT 2002

I am looking for any additional information I can find about McKeel Wise, born 1773. I have received information stating that he married Betty 'Betsey' Bonwell (Bonnewell), who was born April 25, 1779.

I am trying to connect him to my great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Wells Wise, born November 15, 1833. A Bible owned by McKeel was passed down through to Elizabeth. It is quite possible that McKeel is Elizabeth's grandfather, but I do not know this for sure (I have no definite indication that McKeel and Betty had children).

Any assistance that can be provided in making this conneciton would be greatly appreciated.

Charles Purnell and Rachel Deale had 8 children:

John m. Mamie Dilling Edward m. Lily Hartge William m. Mary Simmons Frank m. Janie Windsor Taylor m. Mamie Buckland Virginia m. Charles Mapp Margaret died as a child Robert Murray m. Minnie Virginia Nowell

Robert Murray and Minnie Virginia had 10 children:

Clifford Wickman Virginia m. Fletcher Sebastain, Robert McClintock and Lowell Morris Taylor m. Evelyn King Beatrice Iris (Peadie) m. Henry McDonald

Silver F. Smith (oakvur@ix.netcom.com), Sun Aug 4 14:18:58 EDT 2002

Did anybody out there witness any strange aircraft hovering over the ESVA just south of Occohannock Cr., in the mid to late 1600s? Have you heard of any stories of these strange crafts? One of my ancestors, a John Smith and his wife Jane suddenly showed up on the ESVA where they bought 400 acres of land, settled down and raised a family of 10. There are no records of where either came from, how they got there, who any of their parents or siblings were or where or when they were married. The way I see they must have beamed down from some space craft. Can you help?

Do you sell these names and addresses? Someone has contacted me using my full name and the only place I did that was on your site. It was from one doing the 'Nigerian money spam letter'. Sad to see they can do this. Please reply if you will. It came from a yahoo address.

I found the name John Lewis Porter through Familsearch.org. John Lewis Porter is my great grandfather. I am not sure if this is the same. On the Ghoate web site, you list him as Uncle John: John Lewis Porter or John Nairn Marshall, could you give more information on him. We are unable to locate any information before 1900 on him. He has become a mystery man. If you have b-date etc. basiclly anything would be of great help. thank you.

I am researching information on the HUDGINS family. From what I've been told, there was an unknown Hudgins who, I believe married Nancy Forrest. They had 2 children. For some reason (death, maybe?), he married Caroline Grissett and they had 4 children. One of these women also remarried. I believe to a Henry Callis. (I'm totally confused by all this, as I have so little info to go on.) Anyone who knows of these families, I would greatly LOVE to hear from you. Also, I was told by my father that sometime during the early 1930's, a bridge was being built from Gwynn's Island to Matthews Co., to keep from using the ferry. He remebers staying at a hotel there then that was owned or operated by a Mr. Hudgins & his wife Hazel. Any info on this would be appreciated, as I believe they are all connected somehow. Thanx! kismet9696@cox.net

So far, I have not been able to assign parents to this group of offspring: Nora, 1860-1910, md William Silas Payne; Ella,1866-1944, md. William Long Jones; Levenia (Vinnie), b. 1871, md Alfred W. Payne; Minnie, md. ? McKissick (Phila); Bertha (Bert), b. c 1885, md Herman Smack; a brother who apparently settled in Texas, going there by train. I would be interested in knowing the earliest antecedents of the Slocomb family on the Eastern Shore. --RFJ

Patrick Miller (pmiller@acuson.com), Wed Jun 12 13:10:20 EDT 2002

I am descended on my mother's side of the Wise family of Accomac County, VA. I can trace my family backward in Accomac County from Governor Henry A. Wise to 1635, and even back to England in 1066. I can trace forward from Governor Wise from one of his four sons, John Sergeant Wise for another generation to include Hugh Douglas Wise and Jennings Cropper Wise. Governor Wise's son Obadiah Jennings Wise was killed early in the Civil War at Roanoke Island in 1862, so I doubt that I'm descended from him. Governor Wise had two other sons, Henry A. Wise II and Richard Alsop Wise...but I'm not sure of the names of any (if any) of their children's names. I can trace backward from my grandfather Alva O'Dell Wise one generation to my great-grandfather Junius Wise. There is at least one generation and possibly two between my maternal great-grandfather Junius Wise and either John Sergeant Wise, Henry A. Wise II or Richard Alsop Wise. Any information from any source would be greatly appreciated, as this would complete the Wise Family Tree from my generation (24th or 25th) back to England in 1066. THANK-YOU IN ADVANCE.

I was told recently by a Tangier cruise boat tour guide that nearby Watts Island was abandoned due to population decline as the result of executions of many inhabitants for their aiding and abetting the British during the War of 1812. It has always been my understanding that the abandonment of Watts was due to the severe erosion which made the island unsafe and left too little arable land to support continued occupation. Can anyone confirm or deny with certainty the execution story? Thanks.

Also, ELIZABETH VIRGINIA MOORE of Dagsboro, DE married EDWARD TWIFORDdward of Cape Charles. Her three brothers, WILIIAM MOORE married FANNIE LAPLACE on The Shore, ISAAC MOORE married BETIE PIERSON, Daughter oF STOCKLEY PIERSON of Northhampton co. and ALFRED MOORE married Miss Henderson and then Miss Davis of Accomack Co. Hello,

I'm doing a genealogy search and have traced my great, great, great grandfather to Loudon Cty. VA. In searching that area I also discovered the name, Benjamin Dary (Darby) who owned land in your map area N125 and his will was probabted in 1760. I really suspect this in the father of Philip (my greatX3 father). I've hit a brickwall in trying to get more info. on Benjamin (he shows up in your records too.). I cannot get to the Northampton Cty records site to look at the will and it's terms. Also, I cannot find anyother info. on Benjamin (descendents and parentage or place of birth).

Can you help me or steer me in the right direction?

Thanks,

C. Dary

I have hit a brick wall concerning the early Ishams of the Eastern Shore. Daniel Isham (Eshun) (d. 1693) arrived from London 1661. What ship did he arrive on? He married (1) Margaret Howell: who were her parents? He married (2) Susanna Thomas: who were her parents? He married (3) Gertrude Bowman Cropper. The Next generation is John Eshun (d. 1716) who married (1) Mary? Mary later married a Kellam. What was Mary's maiden name. The next generation is Soloman Eshun. He married Johnson Nottingham. They moved to Worcester Co. MD about 1743. I would like to hear from anyone who is researching the Isham line in any of its variant spellings.

A couple of questions and a correction. I was looking for information on Rosser Burton. He went to Baltimore. Also in looking up information on the Gunter side of my family I noticed that someone was missing. This would be on the children of Frances and Benjamin T Gunter. The list I have found have three children listed. Benjamin T Gunter, Sue Addison Gunter(who died when still a baby) and Ellen Fisher Gunter. There was also and Emily Gunter. Does anyone else have this same informaion? I also have the same problem with the Burton side of my family. This would be on the children of Arenthia Kellam Burton and Joshua Thomas Bradford Burton. There are 7 children listed. Willaim Heber, Charles Smith, Ellen Christian, John R(father to Rosser)Thomas Kellam (my Grandfather)Maggie and Ruth. In talking with my mother (Sue Elizabeth Burton Atkinson) she stated two girls are missing. Elizabeth Sue Burton married George Savage Budd and Mamie Burton. Not sure who she married. Hi everyone, this is my first time posting to this site. My ancestors come from the Sanford, VA area of the Eastern Shore. From what I know they lived there from the early 1900's til probably the 1950's. My great-grandfather was Thomas Jenkins and his wife was Elizabeth Bibbins(Bivans) Jenkins. They had five children: Ethel b. 1899 who married William Gambrill Donald b. 1900 who married Ruby L. Wheeler Clarence b. 1902 who married Clara M Stevens, Thomas b. 1904, Mary E.b. 1906 who married Bradford Marshall, Eva F. b. 1912 who married Lee Ayres and Earl b. 1917 who married Mary (Unknown last name). Elizabeth Bibbins Jenkins says she was born in Withams, VA to George and Sallie Bivans, unable to find any documention to that fact. Can't even find George and Sallie in Accomac County. Maybe someone out there recognizes any of these names. Would happy to hear from you. On a different note, just wondering if any of you out there still live on the Eastern Shore and are familiar with the Sanford, VA area. I have a chance to buy the house the Jenkins' lived in. The house is in terrible shape, a new roof is a must, but would like to know a little more about the area. Any thoughts would appreciate from the friendly GHOTES out there. Thanks

His father was Lee W. married to Sallie A. Cugler. They moved to New Jersey in the 1930's. Ben was my father's grand-father & I know there was a relationship between Ben & Bill...I think they were brothers??? Ben was one of the oldest people living on the island, age, 103?? & Bill was the last known resident after the storm. His likeness is on a stone at the Assateague lighthouse. Any info on Ben & Bill would be enormously helpful. Also, any info on the Cugler family would be much appreciated. Can't seem to find any evidence of their existance on the island.

Thanks much, Carol

Joseph T. Slavin, III (jsla@loc.gov), Thu Jan 24 13:17:58 EST 2002

Is anyone out there researching the following surname/surnames:

Vernetson, Vernettson, Vernelson, Vanelson, Vanetson, Vannetson, Vannettson, Vaneretson

in Accomack, Somerset, Worcester Counties and in Baltimore City ??

I'm not certain if all the individuals I find are of the same family or if these were several separate families...

First names for male members that I have encountered include: Guzaline ('the younger'), William (4 of them), William E., William G (Sr. and Jr.), Elias (3 of them), Charles, Charles M., Thomas, , Nathan, 'Jester', Selby, Silas (probably Elias), Elias Tubman, Joseph, etc. etc..

I'm trying to determine if these are all the same one family, and a few specifics like: 1. Who were the parents of the Elias who left a 1772 Accomack Will ? He left underage children including son William who was assigned to one of the George Corbins of Accomack as his guardian. Note: the Elias son of Elias mentioned in the 1742 Accomack Will of Guzaline sounds like he may be referring to the two Elias's of Worcester (Wills executed 1752 and 1763).

2. Who were the parents of the William who's Estate was administered by (son ?) Nathan in 1744 in Worcester. ? A Worcester Land Abstract in the 1760's shows a Nathan of Pennsylvania then.

3. Who were the parents of the William who married Bridget Miles in Somerset in 1801 and left a Will executed in 1814 in Worcester and Somerset (Worcester Estate Docket March 22, 1814).... ? The 1810 Somerset Census shows him aged > 45 years

I'm trying to find a line (if such exists) down to the William who married Bridget Miles. above.

I haven't been able to find any activity on any of hte variations of the surname/surnames on any INTERNET Rootsweb sites...

I am a decendent of Anthony and Mary Johnson.I know they had two sons,John and Richard Johnson. Each son had sons of their own.John had John Jr.,and Richard had Richard Jr. and Francis(also a son). The time period being between 1623-1661.The next relatives that our family recognizes are Noah & Agusta Johnson. Time of existance, unknown. They had son,James Edward Johnson who also had James E Jr.From James Jr. I have an account of most relatives to the present.James Jr is myGGGrandfather.Any info will be helpful. All were from Accomack Va.Around 1662 I have Anthony and family moving to the Eastern Shore of Md in the Somerset County section. There are land transaction recorded in their names. My family still occupy the land that was settled and called Freedomtown now called Upper Hill.Their graves are located in the church cemetery called Greenmount. The cemetery was not on the church grounds but about 1 mile away in a wooded tract of land named Greenmount Cememtary. No living relative can remember where it is.It has not been used since the 1940's.My work is continuing trying to find the cemetery.I've been told by relatives in their 90's that there should be rows upon rows of graves. Most with headstones.

I am related to Richard BOLTON. He is also in the Ghotes of Virginia in the Thorowgood section. It was my understanding that Richard Bolton married Sarah Langston, not her sister Frances as I find here. I have a marriage bond involving Richard and Leonard Langston, in which Richard states his intention to marry Sarah. I would be interested in knowing why this list shows he married Sarah's sister Frances. Thanks!

Any one know anything about my Grandparents, James Alexander Mates from Wicklow Ireland who married Margrate McDonald. Margrate was born Tweed Island Scotland. I don't know where that is because I have never heard of it before. Margrate went to Adelaide South Australia. James was born 25 May 1876 and Died 5 December 1947 and buried in West Terrace Cemetery. Margaret is also buried West Terrace Cemetery and she died 27 November 1966. I beleive Margarates mother's name was Christinna and her fathers name was John McDonald. They went to Port Lincoln in South Australia and are buried there. I don't have a lot of information about them but I do know that they were the first couple to be married in teh church there. I think the church was Wesley church, but I am not sure. I have not been able to get any info on the cemetery there either. That is all I know about them.

My grandfather's name was David Daniel Mears from the Chesapeake Bay Area (I'm thinking Accomack County). We have always believed that he was one of Columbus Mears sons, but I cannot find his name listed anywhere in the family. He left home around the age of 17 & went to NC, married my grandmother, Atelia Garris, then moved to Hartsville, SC. I am believing that his date of birth was around 1881, his death was in 1948. Is there anyone that can help me solve the mystery? I'm up against a brick wall with no place to go. Thanks, Rena Mears Locklair

Am searching for information on Kessie Annis, married John Dennis Annis in May 1887, from the Guilford area. She died on or shortly after March 4, 1908 due to complications from childbirth. From what I can tell, her sister was Sallie F. Taylor, but I may be wrong on the relationship. I have not been able to find much of mention for John Dennis Annis as well. He had 15 children, so there must be something more on him somewhere, right?!

I have searched everywhere I can think of, so any resource ideas or information would be greatly appreciated! Happy New Year to All!

William C. Brittingham (brittinb@visi.net), Wed Nov 28 00:45:14 EST 2001

John Hall BRITTINGHAM migrated from the eastern shore (Accomack) around 1800 to York County (VA) and later to Elizabeth City County, (VA). I am wondering why he moved his family across the Chesapeake Bay to this part of the country. One explanation I think has merit is that the Loyalists -Tories- had been persecuted throughout the Revolution, particularly if they actually fought for the Crown. During and after the Revolution, the states confiscated the Troy properties and sold them in small parcels at a very low price to pay off the government's debt. The new landowners could settle or sell for quick cash depending on their desires. Where can I find information, sources, (i.e. books, articles, etc.) that dealt with this, particulary in Virginia, (even better in the York and Elizabeth City Counties areas)? Does the above make sense for the migration of BRITTINGHAMs and other families? Or is there some other causes such as religious beliefs? Are there court records or documents that provide some sort of information? How does the state record the abandonment or confiscated land? What court would this be recorded? What time frame is there between the end of the Revolutionary War and the settlement of most of the Tory properties with new owners? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Bill BRITTINGHAM.

My father, James William Regier, born January 25, 1928 in Michigan was >adopted. All we know is his father gave him up for adoption, the name on >the papers was higby or higbee. My father was never told he was adopted he >found the adoption papers in an upstairs bedroom of his mothers house on the >eve of his wedding. The next day when my mother and father went to look >more closely at the adoption papers they were gone. Out of respect for my >fathers adoptive parents he never mentioned it to them and the secret died >with my grandparents. Can you give me any insights? Could my Higby be related to any of yours? and do you remember if there were any children given up for adoption? I think the mother died in childbirth and that is why the father's was the only name on the adoption papers.

Charles Longworth Craig (taibercrai@aol.com), Tue Nov 6 23:42:26 EST 2001

Hello, My name is Charles Longworth Craig and I have family history in Accomack County that which I am trying to uncover. I am trying to uncover information on a Daniel J. Longworth. I believe he would be my Great,great-grandfather. He was married at least twice in the Onancock/Onley area. The two marriages that I know of(not necessarily in this order)

********Mrs. Adleline Rich Harding (Longworth) born- 1871; died April 1955

********Mrs. Elizabeth Carmine Broughton (Longworth) born-1866; died Dec. 13, 1953 What was her New Jersey connection and what town did theylive in

If anybody could be so kind as to shed some light. My grand mother, daughter of Daniel J., passed away. She was from a different marriage( I think). Any way, her name is Helen Rose Longworth(she was 1st married to Craig; 2nd married to Illich)

I am trying to answer many familiar geneological questions through my ancestor Daniel J. Longworth. When did he arrive in the eastern shore? Why the Eastern Shore? What did he do there? Where did he live there? Children? Why did he leave? With Whom? Where?

Can anybody from the Rich, Broughton, Carmine, or Harding family shed any light? Please let me know

Corrine Corbin (Corrine35@msn.com), Sat Oct 6 19:52:37 EDT 2001

I have found the web site and the people here to be the nicest and friendliest I've met in a great long time. I got answers to questions in the past about the Corbins for my daughters and I'm still trying to find anything I can on the other side of the house (tree). My side is named Shirley and I can get them back to Clark Shirley married to Caroline Baker and living in Allegheny County, Penna. While surfing around for more info on the Shirley line I ran across another site with a wealth of Corbins going back to 1195. They are listed in England and it gives some of the names as Thomas of --- Corbin (listing the estate I believe). Is this normal to name the children after the land and are they from the same line as my children who are decendants of the Corbins of Aacomack County, VA.? Now I have to try to find that web page again!

Clifford Parks (cparks8602@aol.com), Tue Oct 2 16:29:02 EDT 2001

I am looking for any data about a Thomas Parks and/or his sons John, Charles and Joseph. Thomas could have been in the Cheriton area about 1620 to 1633 involved in salt making. Family records claim he is in the area census of 1623 and 1629. John is supposed to have had a son John,Jr. about 1652 that married Mary about 1685. Information on this later John is readily available and appears to be an early member of a long line of Parks. My grandson would be the 13th generation of the Thomas I seek. Any information of the these early Parks men would be appreciated. Is there a source or location for any records of the Cheriton area for the time I listed?

Austin aka Gus, Wilgus (awilgus@nternet.net), Thu Sep 27 20:59:18 EDT 2001

My possible ancestor Richard Wilegoos/Wildgoose / Wildgows / Wildgoos shows up in the Court Records in Accomack in the March 1665/66 court Scession. Later he and or a Robert Wildgoose show up in the Northampton Titables in 66, 67, 68 and 71. In 1677, Richard, with wife and children move in to Old Somerset County, Maryland transported from Virgina by a William Ratclife. I would like to come up to Virginia to do some research to try and tie these folks into my Delaware/Maryland Wildgoose line that is tight back to 1720. Can some one give me a pointer or two on researching up there? Should I start in Accomack or Northampton County? Are the documents still in the courthouses or are they in Richmond at the Archives? Was Accomack a split off of Northampton or vice versa. I will probably spend a week when I come, but don't want to waste it. Thanks for the help Gus Wilgus, Emerald Isle, NC

G.T. Keyser, Jr. (OPTELMD@AOL.Com), Mon Aug 20 23:51:18 EDT 2001

I'm looking for the parents of my GGGGGrandfather, William Harris Keyser(Prounounced Keezer). According to most records, William Harris Keyser was born around 1750 in Northampton County, VA. We've heard from various living relatives that his father might have come from MD or PA, settled in the Northampton county area and married a native American. We have no official record of William's birth other than the 1750 estimate. We did however find his request for a pension for his service in the American Revolution. He enlisted under CAPTAIN THOMAS BAYTOP in Second Va State Regiment in Gloucester County (Williamsburg area). He then marched to Hampton, NJ, and then to Valley Forge where he joined the army under GENERAL WASHINGTON. He served 5 years. It looks like he spent his early years in the Eastern Shore and Tidewater area. After the war, he migrated to Bath County VA (Hot Springs area) where he married Keziah Snead and had 10 Children. He died in December of 1837. Has anyone ever run across any Keysers on the Eastern Shore? I'd appreciate any help we can get. Many Thanks. George T. Keyser, Jr.

Jim Tison (Tyson) (jtison448@aol.com), Mon Aug 13 19:36:20 EDT 2001

My eighth-great-grandfather, John Tyson, his wife Susannika, and their son, Mathias, owned land in Northampton County in 1679. They are listed in the GHOTES map page (area 45). Family historians theorize that the John Tyson name is of Dutch origin (Jan Matthiasson). I am trying to determine what John's true European name really was, and his origin - just when did he settle in Virginia, and where did he come from (New York?). Does anyone have a clue?

This family seems to have just appeared from nowhere.

David F. Coffin, Jr. (davidcoffin@earthlink.net), Mon Aug 6 14:41:09 EDT 2001

I am looking for further information concerning Thomas Coffin. In 1664 he is listed as transported by Capt. John Savadge (Savage), in relation to patent of 9000 acs. N’pton Co. In 1683 Thomas Coffin is mentioned w/wife Isabell (Hays) as parents to eldest daughter Anne, recipient of deed gift [one cow & calf] from grandfather Robert Hays. In 1684 Thomas Coffin is a witness to William Gilding’s will. In 1685, Robert Hays [father of Isabell Hays Coffin] leaves Thomas Coffin a steer. In 1688, there is a Patent for Rogue’s Island to John Burrus (Burroughs) and Thomas Coffin, and in 1691 Thomas Coffin and Isabell Coffin sell Rogue’s Island to John Wilkins, Jr.

Caprice Crockett Davis (Davisce@wirefire.com), Mon Aug 6 00:36:36 EDT 2001

I have traced my Crockett family line back to Tilmon Crockett b.1776?. He married Elizabeth Dennis in Franklin Co. Va. in 1796. He had a son John T. Crockett who was born in Botetourt Co. Va. After Elizabeth Dennis died he married a widow,Arminta Nicewander Waggoner in the 1830's. He is listed in the 1930 Va. census as living in Tazewell Co. Va. There are many Crockett's listed in the Tazewell and Wythville area but I cannot make a connection with any of those lines. I have seen information that a Crockett who had 6 sons had a connection with Tangier island and thought possibly Tilmon Crockett had a connection with them. If anyone has any information on Tilmon or his wife Elizabeth Dennis Please E-mail me at Davisce@wirefire.com.

Thank you Caprice Crockett Davis

Eleanor Edmondson (genpics@iopener.net), Wed Aug 1 09:50:44 EDT 2001

I need to find the descendants of a THOMAS ROGERS who married a NANCY CULTER in Accomack Co. 30 May 1785.

According to a published family genealogy this Thomas Rogers is the same one that was born in 1762 in Surry/Sussex Co. to Reuben Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth. I am trying to either prove or disprove that Thomas is or is not one in the same man.

Any help on these two families in Accomack would be greatly appreciated. Originally we were told that the name was CULLOR, but after checking the marrige records they say CUTLER.

Thanks. Eleanor

Tom Wessells (tommot22@aol.com), Thu Jul 26 22:28:41 EDT 2001

I am trying to identify the parents of JAMES VESSELS/WESSELS who resided on Fishers Island, Accomack Co. He married Elizabeth Tolley. He left a will c1754. There is some belief that his father was Gerardus Wessels of Maryland. Gerardus emigrated south from New Amsterdam where he was born to parents who were Dutch emigrants. Any help with this connection would be greatly appreciated.

I am also trying to make the link between the James Vessels noted above and a James Vessels from Maryland. The latter married Temperance Tippett in 1781 in Church Hill, Queen Anne Co., MD. The James noted above from Fishers Isalnd names a son James in his will. Until recently, this James, noted in his father's will, all but disappears from the records. All of his siblings can be tracted in Accomack Co. Is the James who wed Termperance Tippett our lost boy? Again, any help would be appreciated.

I think I'm looking for the impossible! I have been hunting for brothers who were said to have landed at Point Comfort (circa 1690-1715) Thomas (my line), Cornelius, John & another who's name I don't know. Surname was Manley (later Manly for my line).

Louise Manly (in a 1930 publication) states that the brothers landed at Point Comfort, later moving on to MD (checked there and have found nothing), later still to NC (again, my line) where I have established source documents for 1790 on.

Any ideas or suggestions of where to search would be most appreciated.

I am looking for someone who would be willing to locate and take a picture of the gravestones, if they are there, of my great-grandfather, John Arthur Simkins, and my great-grandmother, Margaret S. (Fitchett) Simkins. I just found out from the Marshall's of Northampton County, VA, website that he is buried in Shirley Cemetery. He died about 1871 and she about 1876. I am descendent of their youngest child, John Arthur Simkins, Jr., born in 1866. I have been working on this line since 1972 and was up against a wall for any information on the Simkins family until I came across the GHOTES website and the Marshall's of Northampton County.

I live in Floresville, Texas, and it is not likely that I will be able to get there anytime soon to find it myself. I would greatly appreciate it if someone is willing to help me. I would gladly pay for any reasonable costs.

Thank you.

I am looking to confirm the HARMON/HARMAN/HARMAR line that came to Accomac in the early days of settlement. I am descended from GEORGE HARRISON HARMON born Jan. 5, 1778. He was the son of Henry Harmon. He died when George was about 11. My records show that George married AMELIA POLK, sixth daughter of CAPT. WILLIAM POLK who was head of the Accomac militia for about 8 years. Records that I find on this site tell me that AMELIA POLK married LITTLETON HARMON who was George's brother. I know for a fact that she married George because we have found the graves of George and Amelia in Chatham Co.,NC. They moved from Accomac about 1806. Can anyone help me with this confusion? Also, anyone with the line back from HENRY HARMON who was married to someone names SINAH ? could you please help me.

Barbara Collin (b.collin@worldnet.att.net), Sat Jun 2 11:37:37 EDT 2001

After endless searching for the parents of Solomon Hays, born in NC in 1803, I came across a reference to his son, James P. Hayes, stating that his grandparents were Solomon Hays and Mary Wise, married in MD, and that Mary was a sister of Gov. Wise. I found a church record in Montgomery County, MD for the marriage of Mary Wise and Solomon Hays in 1781, but could find no other documentation. Since there was no Governor Wise of MD, I'm assuming J.P. meant Henry A. Wise of VA. Does anyone know if Henry had a sister named Mary? Since he was born in 1806, there would be quite a split in their ages, but that isn't unusual even now. Could be a half sister. Could even be an aunt. There's always the possibility that the interviewer misunderstood. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Two years of chipping at the mortar to topple the Solomon Hays brick wall, and what do I get? Another Solomon Hays....

George A. Rolley (Dryver008@cs.com), Fri May 25 09:53:41 EDT 2001

I am researching the Rolley family from the Eastern Shore. My Great Grandfather, George A. Rolley, was born in 1867 and he died in 1939. He was married to Anna Philips. Upon her death he remarried a Francis Widgeon, who, I think, died in the late 1960's. His father was Raymond Rolley (1836-1915). He was married to Clara Costin Rolley. Raymond's father and mother's names were William and Mary Rolley. I have some good information taken from a family bible and would be willing help anyone with their research. I would be glad to hear from anyone who knows anything about my great grandfather and his ancestors.

I am seeking ancestry of JOHN GILLETT. He married Elizabeth Patterson Ramsey of Accomack Co., widow with two daughters. She was the daughter of Wm. Patterson. Her daughters, Isabell and Mary Ramsey were by her first husband Bernard Ramsey. John Gillett lived at White Oak Rover, Onslow Precenct, NC and held a grant in 1728. So, the marriage would have been prior to that date. Records show he lived near the Houstons, Ramseys, and Pattersons in the time frame 1700-1728. John died in 1753. Perhaps you have the key to finding out who John GILLETT was? We are trying to connect him to the Gilletts of CT....three brothers who arrived from England in 1600's. Any information is appreciated.

Simon Lisney (simon@lisney.co.uk), Thu Apr 12 12:34:02 EDT 2001

I am interested in the Lisney connection found here. Notably Ralph and Mary Lisney circa 1727. I think I know which Ralph this is:   Ralph LISNEY Sex:  M Marriage(s): Spouse:  Mary Mrs LISNEY Marriage:  Abt. 1699 Of, Accomack, Virginia

Interestingly I believe they had already married in London, England 2 years before:

Ralph LISNEY Sex:  M Marriage(s): Spouse:  Mary CROWLAND Marriage:  5 Dec 1697 Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England

Hence her referred to as Mrs mary Lisney. Not sure why they would have another marriage ceremony in USA?.

I guess that Ralph came from a family of Mill owners but have not idea how/ why he moved to Virginia.

I also see the later son Lisney Gootee! Interesting as I have seen the Lisney surname (not a common one ;-) used as a first name before. For a few females in Columbia and Spain. I wondered if it was perhaps common for slaves to take the name of their owners? Or through marriage etc.

Anyway any ideas of any sources for records of people arriving in thhe US, Virginia around this time would be appreciated. And any information on where abouts they lived.

My email is:

simon@lisney.co.uk

ps Lisney is most likely a Norman French name arriving in England in 1066 and most are found historically in Surrey/ Sussex and London area.

To Whom it May Concern:

My wife, Melissa, and I are trying to track down old copies of an Eastern Shore of VA newspaper, and we were wondering if you might have any leads for us. Melissa's mother's birthday is coming up. Her father (Melissa's grandfather), who died about 20 years ago was a journalist and started out at the Eastern Shore News in Onancock, VA. We thought it would be a great idea to find an issue or two of the paper from around the time he first started with an article or articles he wrote. His name was Emory Dobson and he apparently started writing for the Eastern Shore News in the fall of 1945. I know that's quite a while ago. Any suggestion you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Daman Irby

I am descended from John Marshall and Annabella Toft through Charles Marshall etc. I had always thought that Annabella's father was Edmund Scarbrough. I had extensive information as to this fact from ghotes. Does anyone know the facts?

Peter Francisco fought at the battle of the Guilford Courthouse. He was wounded and left for dead and recovered and joined the Virgina Militia. Are there any more details you could supply concerning him?
