John Buzzy (jbuzzy@mindspring.com), Thu Feb 15 20:29:57 EST 2001

I am seeking any information on whom I can contact to find the date of death of my great grandmother, Ella Melvin. She was buried in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Chincoteague, in 1931. I understand that Beulah Baptist Church burned down in 1973. Does anyone know who I can contact to get burial records for this cemetery? I have checked microfilm records at the Virginia State Library, however, I still can not find Ella's date of death. I hope to get this date so I can request a copy of her death certificate, so that I can learn about her place of birth and parents information. She was married to John Buscey and after his death, she married William E. Melvin (Chincoteague) about 1880. I will greatly appricate any information that anyone can provide, as I am at a brickwall. I have just learned the marriage license of my ancestor Mary Ann who married Luther Briddell was wrong and her maiden name was not Jones, but Johnson. She was the child of John Johnson and Rachel Underhill of Worcester Co. Md. John and Rachel married in Worcester in 1831. According to the 1850 census John was born about 1790 and Rachel about 1815.

Rachel was the child of Thomas Underhill and Leah Powell. Thomas and Leah married in Worcester in 1799.

I have been researching the Addison family for some time now. My line started in Virginia, travled to North Carolina, then Ohio, and then drifted over to Indiana. Some of the names are: William Addison, Thomas Addison, Iverson Addison, John Addison, Robert Addison, and, I think Ransom Addison might belong to this Addison line. William Addison left North Carolina in the early 1820's and went to Indiana. William Addison married a lady with the last name of Craig. I would love to share my Addison research with anyone in the same line.

Wow! Very impressive!

I found you in an effort to find more on Lemuel Mason. I was wondering if the one you have posted could be the same as my great grandfather times 8. I have very little info on him. I had his birth year as 1625. Yours was 1629. He was the father of Francis Mason. Same person? Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Ann Hughes (hugann@onemain.com), Mon Oct 9 17:49:41 EDT 2000

I have an Elizabeth Leatherbury who was married to Edmund living in Virginia. Apparently after Edmund dies (which is before 1855) Elizabeth moves with her children to Northampton Co., PA. Elizabeth would have been born about 1792. I don't have much more to go on except what I have written. One last thing is that in Elizabeth's will she mentions money owed to her from Virginia. Her children would have been: Sarah Elizabeth, Maria and Mary Ann. I would appreicate any clue as to where I might go next since I am not familiar with Virginia. Thanks for all your help.

Dear Ghotes: Many thanks for your help in the past. This is surely the best site on the web, made up, as it is, of many kind and helpful cousins. Can anyone help me document the marriage of my grandparents William Edward Wise and Gertrude Twiford? They are buried at Mt. Holly Cemetary in Onancock. My father, Edward Revel Wise, was born in 1901, so I assume they were married in 1898=190l. Nora Miller Turman once speculated that they may have been married in Maryland. I know that they lived on a farm outside Onancock for about ten years, and that she lived in Onancock after his death in about 1910. Many thanks for any guidance you may offer. Pat

I, would like to find information on the names of the slaveowners in Atlantic township. To be precise I am looking for any information on the Black Feddeman, Fiddemon, Feddemon family. In addition I would like to know about any persons of color who were Free who have that name. I have visited your site often, I like it. I do hope that some one will be able to answer my questions. My father was born and raised in Atlantic and comes from a very large family with the surname listed above. I have never been to Atlantic but am planning to do so very soon.

GHOTES --

I am a graduate student at the University of Virginia working on the impact of the American Revolution on conceptions of race. I'm currently researching the termination of the Gingasink Indians for a chapter of my dissertation. Since I'm just now starting to do research, I was wondering if y'all had any tips or secrets to share about how best to get a solid picture of those people on the ground that were involved with that episode from 1784-1813. I know about all the county records in Richmond, but am unfamiliar with what resources are available in Northampton. I'm trying to figure out exactly who was involved with the petitioning to detribalize the Gingasinks and what involvement they had with the Revolution on the Eastern Shore. Please let me know if you have any helpful input. Thanks much.

Hi, Am looking for Samuel Jr.'s b 1710 son Elijah b 1740 I have an unkn Brittingham b 1735/40 and died before 1783. He had two sons, Elijah b 1763 and Isaac b 1765. Leslie Dryden thought that Micajah Brittingham b 1711 who married Tabitha Newbold could have been the father. I am not sure this is true, as the dates do not align close enough. Samuel Jr.'s Elijah b 1740 is the closest born date to my unkn Brittingham and is the last and hardest to find. Leslie also thought it could be another Elijah, as one was unacounted for in Pitts Creek at that time. Any help in locating this Elijah b 1740 giving his wife and children would be oh, so, greatfully accepted.

Alvertis Taliferro Jackson (talifero@inna.net), Thu Jul 13 00:03:57 EDT 2000

I am researching information on on great, great, great grandparents. They were residents of Mulberry Island. Alexander Ash was born in 1835 and his wife was born in about 1841. They had 8 children (I believe) They were both listed in the 1880 census as mulattoes. Some of the childrens names were Susan, Lottie, Julia, Willie, Mary. They lived right on the James River across from the Jones House in Fort Eustis. As much as I have gone through the history of what is now Fort Eustis, all attempts seem to have been made to leave out that part of history when the residents were forced to sell their property for about an acre and given about a month to vacate. The Ash Family will be having its 8th reunion in August.

My grandmother was born in 1918. She was the daughter of Press Trower I of Eastville. She lived on a Plantation/Farm named Cherrydale. My grandmother told me the house had seven porches and was probably 7500Sq.Ft. It was a 300 acre farm on the water in Eastville. The house burned down in 1921 due to 1 of the 10 servants. She was 3 at the time and that is all she can remember, so she has asked me to find info. I looked in Whitelaw but that wasnt much help. Her name is Ellen Preston Trower. Can anyone provide or guide me to solid confirmation that ties any, repeat any Perry Co.,IN K. family descendant of Richard Kellam who came from England to the Eastern Shore in 1634.

The spelling of this surname has numerous variations that developed as the people went west, south and north. I have one ancestor whose name was spelled 10 different ways over a 20 year span of land tax records in Hardin Co.,KY. Perry Co. has one of the largest concentrations of K.families in the U.S.. This has made it difficult to trace one line all the way back to Richard Kellam but it seems to have significant support in tax records and migration patterns.

Any decendants with artifacts connected to this man, letters, script, pictures of a family home, even a painting or sketch, would be wonderful.

I have a Henry Simpson b. 5-3-1806 VA and found that he was an orphan from the from the Greene Co., TN Court Minutes in 1817. He was indentured at that time to James McPherron but released in 1818 if he would leave Greene County, TN. I think he may have been from a wealthy family because of the terms of the indenture. He also signed a bond for . at age 21 to marry Anna Carter. In addition, he sold 125 acres in 1831 at age 25. I have found a John Simpson who owned 403 acrs of land in 1797 and 75 acres of this land was sold by Henry Simpson, but it was owned by Ellis King since 1805 when he bought it from Jonathan Fuston, and no record could be found of him selling it. Is there a list of guardianships or something that would show orphans who inherited land in VA in 1817 or 1830? Since I do not know which county to search for information in, I need some sort of general listing if there is such a thing.

My first visit to Virgina I commented that it was so beautiful why did anyone leave. Apparently my ancestors did. Info I have is that THOMAS WADLEY came to VA between 1633 and 1679 from Bristol,England as an indentured servant. The name could have been spelled Waddley on the census. He had a son THOMAS WADLEY II born in Goochland County. The family eventually went to TN and my branch to MO. That's all I know - how can I find where Thomas I settled and to whom was he indentured - and how do I go about getting more info? Thanks!

Nasty thing about this genealogy stuff, just when you think you know who you were, someone comes along with perfectly good information to say that maybe you are someone else.

Is the following line right or wrong?

John Rogers and Comfort Prettyman

Comfort, the daughter of Thomas Jr. and Eliz. Enloe

Tom , son of Tom Sr. and Comfort Leatherbury

Sr., son of John Jr., son of John Sr. and Mary

Comfort Leatherbury, daughter of Perry and Comfort Bagwell

Perry, son of Thomas and Ellenor

Comfort Bagwell, daughter of Tom B.and Ann Stockley.

Tom B., son of Henry B. and Alice Hawkins Stratton

Ann, daughter of Frances S. and Jane

Eliz. Enloe, daughter of Tom H. and Mary Hill

Tom E., son of Anthony Enloe and Martha Woodman

Now if we go back up to John Rogers and Comfort Prettyman, their dau- ghter Orpha Rogers, married my Elisha Marvel

Can anyone help me straighten all this out?

Thank you very much for your troubles

Bill Shelton

Trying to find information on George Harman born March 21 1761 in Virginia. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier for Virginia and he served under Lt. Col. John Cropper in the 9th Virginia Regiment Continental Line from Accomack County Virginia. On George Harman's military records he is listed as Mulatto. We know that he was part native american and probably German. George Harman received land in the Virginia Military District in the state of Ohio for his service in the Rev. war. He was living in Accomack county Virginia during the 1800 and 1810 census . His family is listed in the free persons of color catagory during these census years. He moved with his wife and family to Ohio and he died in Pickaway County Ohio Dec. 28 1832. We believe that George Harman's father's name may have also been George. If anyone could help me out with this George Harman family or any of the Harman families listed as free persons of color in Accomack County Virginia I would greatly appreciate it!!! Thanks so much for your time and effort!! Robin Scott

Any information on JAMES H. TWIFORD WHO MARRIED MARY E. HARDISON 1847 in Norfolk VA? Probably descended from ZORABABEL TWIFORD of Accomac, VA. who died in Accomac, VA about 1802 leaving orphans ---one named James. The name Zorababel does not appear again on the Eastern Shore; however, the names Zorababel and Babel appear to have moved over to the western shore. I am looking for any eary 17th and 18th century info on the Garris, Garret, and Garrison familys of the Eastern Shore.

This is what i Know: Amos Garyson came to the eastern shore of VA in the 1600's. he was brought by Richard Jacobs and was indentered to him for 7 years or so. He had several sons and daughters. I have been able to trace my ancestry through his son Amos Garris, but have found very little about the rest of the family. I believe his son Richard may have used the name of Garrison or Garret.

There was a Richard Garrison who married Rose Kellam. Does any one know any thing about him?

Several documents that i have copies of show the name of Garris, Garrison and Garret used interchanable. Also some of the same people appeared to be wittness to documents written Garrisons and Garretts and Garriss.

Rufus D. Passwater (rpassw66@aol.com), Sun Dec 19 20:52:56 EST 1999

I have located Passwaters in Old Somerset County, MD in 1673. It was an orphan whose name I believe was Jonas. I believe his fathers' name was Thomas Passwater. Thomas Passwater pocessed 200 acres, commonly called Cattle Haven on the south side of the Rokawalkin river. It was sold by Jonas Passwater to Alexander Fullerton in 1733.

What I am trying to determine is if Thomas Passwater came here from England, migrated from other areas on the peninsula, or if he had parents that did.

By the way, I have located the Passwater surname in England as early as 1565 and as late as 1735. Their names varied as you can see; Passewater, Paswater, Passwater.

Is anyone familar with this surname? Any suggestion about who, when and were they arrived. I have surveyed ships lists of the period, as well as books that supposedly contained all the names of bondsmen, prisoners, orphans, servants, and gentlemen for the 1600 to 1700 period.

Thanks-

Diane Gilliam Jennings (dljghj@msn.com), Sun Nov 7 22:19:39 EST 1999

Has anyone ever heard of a place called Gilliam's Point? My great grandmother, Margaret Turner Gilliam, said that was where her husbands family (John W. Gilliam) had lived. John drowned at sea aprox. l907, while chopping ice from the riggings of his ship. John's parents were William Gilliam and Carrie E. Thorne. John and Margaret had one son, William Henry Gilliam, my grandfather. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been searching on and off for years with no luck. We recently went online and hope this will prove helpful. Thankyou.

This is not so much a question as a comment. I am related to several of your lines through Andrews, Robbins and Holloway. I have researched the Hamby family name for years and have information on them as far back as the 9th century. I folloed them through England and into Northampton Virginia and Harford County Maryland on to the Carolinas and beyond. I have some fairly extensive files on these families if you want to look through them, I am always amazed though at the work I have encountered with my Hamby family, and I have traced them largely through the maternal lines, so you see I how I caame about so many files and names. I found this record on the internet, i'm not sure which or even if either of these Henry Bird's are related to me, The first time I found Henry Bird he was in fulton Co Il, age 47 born in VA, he had married a second time, as his wife Elizabeth was 28 at that time and his oldest son David was 22, and his next son Richard was 20, So in the 1830 Census he would have been married with David being2 and Richard either not born yet or just a infant. If anyone can give me anymore clues as to if either of these Henry Bird's are related or could be this same one found in 1850 in Il i would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Donna

Bertie Bradford Pinson (bjpinson@cwix.com), Fri Sep 3 23:11:16 EDT 1999

To members of the MEARS and related families: My great-grandfather, George BRADFORD, died in Dorchester County MD in 1914. His death certificate indicated that his mother was Nancy SAVAGE, wife of William Bradford. I assumed that this was her maiden name, and researched the Savage family for many years, but could not link her with anyone. Finally, I found a marriage record of William Bradford and Nancy MEARS in 1831, a year which coincided with George's birth date. Then I found that Nancy Bradford married Joseph F. Ames in 1844, and Nancy B. Ames, the widow of Joseph, married Thomas R. Joynes, Jr. in 1851. I believe that Thomas Joynes died in 1894, so the elderly Nancy must have married again, this time to Mr. Savage. Does anyone have access to Accomack or Northampton marriage records between 1894-1905 to prove my theory correct?

R T Whitelaw and S M Ames mention John Gunsolius or Gonsolius leasing or trying to purchase land. He is on John Wise's Quit Rent rolls for 1674 (Gonsaloes), 1675 (Consalues), 1676 (Gonsaloos), and 1677 (Gonsolvoe). How can I get a copy of the deed?

brian dennard (briandennard@netscape.com), Wed Aug 18 09:31:27 EDT 1999

There is a deal of information on Denwood starting with levin snr and jnr, who lived in accomack, quakers, moving to Somerset MLD by 1670. BUT in researching DENNARD I have found the following:-

1. Levin who came from Bekesbourne, Kent(according to on line data) has no family there- the denwoods being from Scotland, however this same area is strong for dennard.

2. Some of the court records, from VA, show for denwood 'OT Dennard' which means original transcription dennard.

3. The two denwoods are recorded as transporting themselves to Somerset Co ( Skordas) but Dr.gibbs later supplement, from original records shows Levin and Levin DENNARD transporting themselves by 1680( the By is because the records are for rights being claimed 4. denwood is recorded as living at Stonidge ( somerset) same as dennard. 5. male denwoods appear to die away early 1700's and dennards appear 6. A female denwood married into the Miles family but later sons had forename dennard not denwood

Could all of these on line records, including many family trees be based on an original error? Any info would be appreciated

regards,

brian dennard

I am looking for information about John Samuel RUSSELL, married to Mary SCHRIEVES. Their dates of birth are unknown to me, but their son, Samuel Tilton RUSSELL, was born 25 Jan 1879 in Parksley, Accomack, VA. Samuel Tilton RUSSELL is my Great Grandfather through his oldest child, Bertie Elinor RUSSELL Ward, my grandmother.I am wondering if Mary RUSSELL, daughter of John T. RUSSELL of Hunting Creek, married 16 March 1892 to William A. BARNES, son of John BARNES of Hunting Creek, could be part of the RUSSELL family I am searching. A 1952 news article I came across in my grandmother's, Bertie E. RUSSELL WARD, things. It listed many of Mary RUSSELL and William A. BARNES' children living at that time, 1952, in Parskley, VA. The article also mentioned a Lillie RUSSELL married to Tony MIDDLETON, as having shared a double wedding ceremony with Mary and William. If there are any answers out there, please contact me. Sincerely, Boyd J. Christiansen. I reside in the Salt Lake City, UT, area.
