36. THOMAS JOHN5 MARSHALL (MJR.) (THOMAS4, JOHN3, THOMAS2, JOHN1) (#281) was born in Northampton Co VA about 1725. THOMAS died 1773 in Dorchester Co MD, at 48 years of age.

He married SARAH DARBY in Northampton Co VA, about 1751. (Robert Barnes, Maryland Marriages 1634-1777) (SARAH DARBY is #282.) Thomas John married Sarah Darby, bond dated 12 February 175_, secured by Thomas Barlow. (Stratton Nottingham, Marriage License Bonds of Northampton Co. VA 1706-1854)

Thomas John was Sheriff and Justice of the Peace for Northampton Co VA. He purchased 500A 'Carthagena' on a branch of Secretary Creek near New Market. (Jim Marshall's research from Dorchester Deeds HD 30, p. 113, Minutes, p. 108, 1783 tax list, Great Choptank Parish Records, Deeds HD4, p. 592; Robert K. Headley, Jr., 18th Century VA Newspapers, p. 38)

His purchase of "Carthagena" on June 25, 1768 is the earliest record of his being in Dorchester County. (Jim Marshall's notes: Deeds Old 22, p. 386) It is presumed most of his children were born in Northampton County, VA.

Thomas John died 1773 Dorchester Co. (James M. Magruder, Jr., Index of Colonial Wills 1634-1777, Baltimore MD, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1975)

It is not proved that the Levin Marshall, James Marshall and Henry Marshall in Dorchester Co MD where Thomas John's sons.

There was an Esmet Marshall in the 1800 Dorchester census (p. 591), almost certainly a descendant or relative of Thomas John or his brother, Esme Marshall.

Other Marshalls shown in 1800 census of Dorchester Co., MD: Elijah Sr., James, John, Lyna, Nicolass, Rosannah, Thomas Sr., Thomas, Valent, Benjamin and Marshells: Margarett, Thomas and William.

THOMAS JOHN MARSHALL (Mjr.) and SARAH DARBY had the following children:

child 90 i. LEVIN6 MARSHALL (#288). LEVIN died 1822. He married an unknown person. Records show a Levin Marshall married Rosanna Stores April 30, 1785 and a Levin Marshall married Mary Hooper on December 13, 1790; notes of Jim Marshall indicate Levin's wife's name as Margaret and that he died in 1822. (The Levin who married Rosanna Stores died by June 3, 1800, when "The Republican Star" reported her administration of his estate. (F. Edward Wright, MD Eastern Shore Newspaper Abstracts Vol. 1, p. 60)

Levin is listed as next of kin, along with his brother, Theophilus Marshall, at the administration of the estate of Esme Marshall, their uncle, on October 5, 1784, Worcester Co., MD.

A Levin Marshall was appointed judge of Dorchester County Orphans Court as reported in the "Republican Star" on June 25, 1816. (F. Edward Wright, MD Eastern Shore Newspaper Abstracts Vol. 3, p. 48)

child 91 ii. HENRY MARSHALL (#290). A Henry Marshall married a Joan Mitchell September 5, 1786.

child 92 iii. JAMES MARSHALL (#291).

child 93 iv. PATIENCE MARSHALL (#292).

child 94 v. SARAH "SALLY" MARSHALL (#293). She married THOMAS BRERETON February 26, 1781. (THOMAS BRERETON is #294.) Notes of Jim Marshall: Sally is not mentioned in Thomas John's will, but the marriage describes her as the daughter of Mjr. Thomas Marshall of Northampton Co. (18th Century Virginia Newspapers by Robert K. Headley, Jr., 1987, p. 38). This marriage records sounds very similar to one in the Dielman File of the Maryland Historical Society, and this latter record suggests Thomas John as Sarah or Sally's father. Breretons were justices of the peace in Somerset County, MD.

child 95 vi. MARY MARSHALL (#295). Mary may have married John Oram in Dorchester Co., MD.

child + 96 vii. JOHN MARSHALL was born about 1752.

child + 97 viii. THEOPHILUS MARSHALL was born 1755.
