66. MARY⁴ PURNELL (MATTHEW³, THOMAS², THOMAS¹) was born about 1745.

She married JOHN STURGIS (IV). JOHN was the son of JOHN STURGIS (III) and ELINOR (wife of John Sturgis). JOHN died 1797 in Worcester Co., MD. John was in Accomack in 1763. He bought land from Daniel Sturgis, son of John of Worcester, in 1767. 1783 Tax List shows him with Rochester, Double Purchase and Sturgis' Chance, 2M, 3F. 1790 census: 1M-16, 1M16+, 3F. By the ages of his children, it appears that John married at least twice. (research of Vern Skinner) Research of Dr. George Bishop indicates that Mary was the wife of John Sturgis. His wife at the time of his death was called Molly and she was most probably a second wife and mother of his three youngest children. Proof for this marriage is not known.

MARY PURNELL and JOHN STURGIS (IV) had the following child:

236 i. JOHN⁵ STURGIS (V) was born in Worcester Co., MD after 1774. He married NANCY BISHOP in Worcester Co., MD, June, 1797. NANCY was born about 1779. John inherited remainder of his father's land at "Rochester."

1800 census: 2M-10, 1M26-45, 1F26-45 1810 census: probably the John 1M-10, 1M10-16, 1M16-26, 1M26-45, 2F10-16, 1F16-26, 1F26-45, 1F45+ 1820 census - is he the John Sr.

John Sturgis marriages: Nancy Bishop in 1797; Polly Waters in 1805; Mary Rownd in 1816 (unclear is all are the same John Sturgis)

John is probably the John Sturgis, executor of estate of Major Mumford in 1816 and who Mumford called 'friend.' Major Mumford also named John Sturgis, son of John in his will.
