Subject: George Parker and Ann Scarburgh

Here's some more Parker Information.

1. George Parker son of George Parker and Ann Scarburgh was born circa

1687. He witnessed the will of Charles Parker "Armenia" on 16 January 1708/9

in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated on 2 February 1708/9 (Nottingham,

Stratton., Wills and Administrations of Accomack County, Virginia 1663-1800

(Bowie MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1990), p 42 (hereafter cited as Nottingham,

Stratton, Wills and Administrations). The name of his first wife is Unknown.

He married second Elizabeth Deshield circa 1711. Elizabeth was born

circa 1693. She was the daughter of Thomas Deshield. In George Parker

Elizabeth was named by George to handle his estate on 26 September 1733 in

Accomack Co., VA. The will was probated 6 March 1733/4 (Ibid., p 101). In

George Parker will on 26 September 1733 in Accomack Co., VA, Elizabeth was

named as an heir. It was probated 6 March 1733/4 (Ibid., p 101).

George made a will on 26 September 1733 in Accomack Co., VA. It was

probated 6 March 1733/4 (Ibid., p 101). An abstract reads: "To wife 1/2 the

plantation where I now live, 1/2 the marsh and all my Negroes during her

widowhood to bring up the children, but should she marry to have 1/3 and the

balance to be divided between my children Ann, Sarah, Prissilla, Betty,

Levin, John Charles, and Clement. To son George, after his mother's decease

all my lands and marshes where I now live except 400 acres where Mr. Watts

now live at the head of Back Creek, which I give to my son John. To son

Thomas 300 acres on Pocomoke. To son Levin 140 acres on Pocomoke. Wife, son

George and Mr. George Dashawle exrs. Witt: W: Bagge, John Bayley, William

Wise."

NOTE: There are many Back Creeks. The "BACK CREEK" mentioned in this will is

probably in Somerset County. Both John Watts and his son Capt. John Watts

owned land in Somerset.

After looking at all possible "George Parkers," this George Parker is

placed as the son of Major George Parker due to the fact that in Major George

Parker's will probated 7 July 1724, he leaves to his son Henry "the land on

BACK CREEK adjoining his brother George." It this George Parker's will

probated 6 March 1733/4 this George leaves to is son George, after his

HENRY, James, 1731-1804

HENRY, James, a Delegate from Virginia; born in Accomac County, Va., in 1731; pursued classical studies; studied law at the University of Edinburgh; was admitted to the bar and practiced; member of the house of burgesses 1772-1774; member of the State house of delegates in 1776, 1777, and 1779; Member of the Continental Congress in 1780; judge of the State court of admiralty 1782-1788; judge of the general court from December 24, 1788, to January 1800, when he resigned; died at his home, "Fleet Bay," in Northumberland County, Va., December 9, 1804.

This is the Ahnentafel for James Henry. Note the date errors. These are repeated over and over in family histories. Apparently no one thought it noteworthy that James Henry married when he was three years old! 1734 was not the date of marriage; it was the (probable) birth date of Sarah Scarborough. A number of the published genealogies also show another marriage, but that has now been disproved; there were two James Henrys.

Subject: Re: Anthony West/Eleanor Revell

Jim,

I have the transcription of the will of Anthony West (d. 1795) and he mentions the following 9 children: Ann, Revell, John, Elizabeth, George, Rachel, Agnes, Margaret and Isaac. He does not mention Anthony or Susanna. Why is that? Were they already dead?

...Given that, it would appear that an acceptable year of birth for Anthony would be about 1729. I do know that his brother, Abel West, was born 30 May 1734. Abel died on the date of his birth in 1816 at age 82 years. It would be extremely unlikely that Anthony would be 32 years older than his brother, whom he mentions in his will in 1795. That would also make Anthony 93 years old when he died in 1795. I think Anthony was Abel's elder brother but not old enough to be his father and have estimated the year of his birth to be about 1729.

That would mean that Anthony and Eleanor were married about 1750 (give or take a year of two) when Anthony was about 21 years old. That would have meant his first child would have been born about 1751.

Does all this make sense? If not, where have I gone wrong.

That still leaves the question about Anthony and Susanna and why they weren't mentioned in his will in 1795.

She married THOMAS HALL 1734, son of THOMAS HALL and JANE RICKARDS. He was born Abt. 1714 in VA, and died Aft. 1765 in VA.

Notes for ELIZABETH SCARBOROUGH:

Elizabeth Scarburgh was born in Accomack Co, VA 14 Jul 1714. Elizabeth died 4 Nov 1772 in Accomack Co, VA, at 58 years of age. She married Col. Thomas Hall 31 Oct 1735 in Accomack Co, VA. Thomas was born 1714 in Accomack Co, VA. Thomas was the son of Thomas Hall and Jane Rickards. Thomas died 1775 in Accomack Co, VA, at 61 years of age. Thomas Hall was the first recorded County Lieutenant in Acc Co. At the time of Hall's appointment, Colonel Covington Corbin was listed as Commanding Officer of the Acc Co Militia, and Lt. Colonel Thomas Bayly as second in command. This was in 1775. Lt. Col. Bayly received his commission on 25 Apr 1775 and Col. Corbin received his on 27 Jun 1775. After Thomas Hall's death in 1775, George Corbin replaced him as County Lieutenant. In the first days after the Declaration of Independence the county militias were technically under the command of a County Lieutenant, with a Colonel, Lt. Col., and Major working with him. For a number of years the County Lieutenant was effectively the Commander of the Militia, with the rank of Colonel, even though each Militia unit had its own Colonel, Lt. Col., and Major as field officers. Colonel Thomas Hall purchased 475 acres of Tangier Island from Charles Scarburgh (wife Mary Ann). This was was confirmed in Charles Scarburgh's will of 1762. In 1763 Colonel Thomas Hall and his wife Elizabeth (Scarburgh) sold the 475 acres to William Andrews who had married Colonel Hall's daughter Anna Maria Hall. In 1778 Andrews sold it as 450 acres to Joseph Crockett. It has been said that the Island was first settled in 1686 by a John Crockett and his eight sons, who had come over from the Western Shore, but that does not seem to be substantiated by the records. The Crockett family is known to have been on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland at an early date. If they had possibly come to the island at the date indicated, they would have come as cattle-tenders or other tenants of the Scarburgh-West owners. There is no record of a Crockett owning land in Acc Co before this 1778 purchase, and not a Crockett will is recorded there, down to 1800.

She married WILLIAM SMULLEN 1763 in Worcester Co., MD, son of RANDALL SMULLEN. He was born Abt. 1740.

Notes for SCARBOROUGH DICKERSON:

Anne Toft lived at Gargaphie in northeastern Accomack County, Virginia. Colonel Scarborough, her lover, lived at Scarborough's Neck - today called Davis Wharf - the neck of land between Craddock's Creek and Occahannock Creek in Accomack County, Virginia, at his estate called Hedra's Cottage. Dr. Thomas Fowkes lived a little farther north at Onancock, Accomack County, Virginia. His father James Fowkes, Jr., lived at Fookses' Neck on the south side of Matchatank (Matchotank) Creek, between Onancock on the north and Davis Wharf on the south. John Roach, Sr., lived at Annamessex or Annemessex (now Crisfield), Somerset County, Maryland, as did Charles Hall Sr. and Edward Dickerson. Edward Dickerson traded in land - he bought Contention at the head of the Annemessex River in 1667 and sold it in 1668; he purchased Irish Grove on Morumsco Creek in 1673 and sold it in 1675 (page 443, Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, by Clarence Torrence (available from Willow Bend Books, Westminster, Maryland). His son Edmond Dickerson, Sr., owned Limbrick in Somerset County - he married Elizabeth Marshall, daughter of Annabella Toft-Scarborough and John Marshall. Benjamin Fookes (son of Dr. Thomas Fowkes) moved from Onancock, Accomack County, Virginia, to Worcester County, Maryland. His wife was Catherine Roach of the aforesaid Roach line of Annemessex, Somerset County, Maryland. This is a sketch of the original abodes of these early ancestors. All these bloodlines and more eventually converged at the Snow Hill area, Worcester County, Maryland (east, north and northeast of these other sites), in James Edward Smullen (christened Edward James Smullen) who went to Livingston County, Kentucky in 1836.

Notes for WILLIAM SMULLEN:

William Smullen, immigrant from Ireland to Somerset County, Maryland in 1680, married Mary (who married Ambrose Riggin after his death). Their children are listed in Ruth T. Dryden's Smullen Family, pages 194-195 (available from the Nabb Research Center, Salisbury University, 1101 Camden Avenue, Salisbury, Maryland 21801-6860; telephone: 1-410-677-5067; e-mail:frmiller@salisbury.edu;fax: 1-410-677-5067; http://www.nabbhistory.salsibury.edu).

The same information appears on page 1 of Eugene Trimble's The Smullen Family of the Eastern Shore of Maryland 1680-1974; ibidem). Pat Taylor of the Nabb Research Center researched the Smullen line for me. She sent me copies of: Pages 194 and 195 of Ruth T. Dryden's Smullen Family; Page 1 of Eugene Earl Trimble's The Smullen Family of the Eastern Shore of Maryland 1680-1974; Maryland Land Office (Patent) Record) 1679-1681 Liber WC2, Folio 120, listing William "Smullen" being transported 1679 aboard "ship Mary of Liverpoole"; Inventory of the estate of William Smullen, deceased, dated January 17, 1703, Maryland Testamentary Proceedings Prerogative Court 1697-1711, folio 210; Somerset County, Maryland, Judicial 1730-1733, folio 59, deposition (Ambrose Riggin and his mother Mary, aged eighty-six years); Somerset County, Maryland, Judicial 1735, Mar.-1735/36, Folio 314, deposition of March 1735/36 (Ambrose Riggen aged sixty-five and Mary Riggen aged sixty years); Goshen abstract from Ruth T. Dryden's Land Records of Somerset County, Maryland,, page 183; Harmsworth abstract from Ruth T. Dryden's Land Records of Somerset County, Maryland, page 200 - in 1684 James and Grace Woolford sold Harmsworth to Edmund and William Smullen, my Randall's brothers; Benson's map Somerset County, Dublin Election District No. 4 - upper part showing that patents Goshen and Harmsworth are close - these properties are southeast of Princess Anne, Maryland.

From this information it is learned, therefore, that Mary Riggin (the widow of William Smullen, the immigrant) was shown in the deposition concerning land boundaries of Minshalls Adventure, dated March, 1735/36 as being sixty years old; Ambrose Riggin (her second husband) was shown as being sixty-five years old and her son Randall Smulling (Smullen) forty-seven years old. The deposition was authorized in a document dated "…this ninth day of ffebruary Anno Domini 1735/6____" - that is exactly as it reads in the original. So Mary _____who married William Smullen, the immigrant, was born in 1675 and would have been twenty-eight years old when William Smullen died in 1703. Now that is picking them young - right out of the cradle - at thirteen years old, the time of the onset of puberty. So Randall Smullen was born when his mother was only thirteen years old - it is all there - in black and white - so she was the proverbial child bride of early colonial history. William Smullen and Mary _____ therefore were married in 1689.

The following is from page 194 of Ruth T. Dryden's Smullen Family:

Subject: John and Samuel Scarborough

In response to John and Samuel Scarborough/Ann and Margaret Kendall

Marriages Northampton County, Virginia 1660-1854 3rd Revised Edition Abstracted and Compiled by Jean M. Mihalyka Page 93 states as follows:

John Scarburgh married Ann Kendall 26 Jun 1759; John of Worcester County, Maryland; daughter of John Kendall, Gent consented, William Wood was security.

Samuel Scarburgh married to Peggy Kendall 10 Apr 1759; Samuel of Worcester County, Maryland; daughter of John Kendall, security.

In 1742 an act of the Maryland Assembly created a new county on the "seaside of Somerset called Worcester County. The formation of Worcester removed a large portion of land and approximately one-half of its inhabitants from Somerset County. Therefore both John and Samuel were born in Somerset County as Whitelaw reported but at the time of their marriages they were from Worcester County as Jean reported.

Clayton Torrence reports that "Worcester County was organized at the house of David Murry in Snow Hill Town, December 11, 1742 by virtue of a commission from Lord Baltimore dated December 10, 1742; commissioners or justices of the peace being John Henry, John Scott, William Lane, Samuel Hopkins, John Miller, John Scarborough, John Kelly and William Burton; Robert King, Jr. became clerk and Edmund Hough underclerk." Quoted from Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland Page 429.

Letter of Transmission. xiii

On September 23, the Proprietary party won another victory, casting 27

votes in favor of making an allowance to Councillors in the Journal of Ac-

counts, while 22 votes were cast in opposition by Bond of St. Mary's, Wilson

and Harris of Kent, three delegates from Anne Arundel (Henry Hall voted

aye!), the delegates from Calvert, Charles and Talbot, Hooper of Dorchester,

Sheredine and Paca of Baltimore (John Hall and Buchanan voted aye),

Wootton and Addison of Prince George's (Sprigg voted aye!) and Bordley

of Annapolis. Upon the same day, the House indefinitely postponed (by assign-

ing the consideration of the subject to a day after the close of the session) the

provision for an appropriation for the purchase of arms, etc., by a vote of 32

to 18. The Proprietary forces were beaten, mustering only Barnes of

St. Mary's, three of the four members from Kent (Harris voted aye!), the

Somerset delegates, Thomas of Talbot, Ennalls of Dorchester, Colvill and

George of Cecil, Gordon of Annapolis, Wilkinson and Hopper of Queen Anne's

and Henry, Selby and Outten of Worcester. On the following day, Septem-

ber 24, a motion to reconsider this action was rejected by precisely the same

vote.

On September 24, the House, by the same vote, refused to reconsider this

decision. The House decided, by a vote of 24 to 21, to approve of a message

to the Upper House refusing to agree to its amendments to the Journal of

Accounts. The majority contained the Proprietary party and may have wished

to ward off a more hostile message, comprising the delegations from

St. Mary's, Somerset, and Cecil, the Greshams of Kent, Henry Hall of Anne

Arundel, Courts of Charles, Thomas of Talbot, Ennalls and Lecompte of

Dorchester, John Hall of Baltimore, Gordon of Annapolis, all the Queen

Anne's members except Pemberton, and Henry and Purnell of Worcester.

The last division of the Session followed immediately and resulted in a

determination, by a vote of 25 to 19, not to grant Bladen's request of a present

for the Six Nations. Those who would have made the present were Bond and

Barnes of St. Mary's, the Greshams of Kent, Henry Hall of Anne Arundel,

Courts of Charles, Stoughton, King and Dennis of Somerset, George and

Colvill of Cecil, Sheredine, Paca and John Hall of Baltimore, Sprigg of

Prince George's, Gordon of Annapolis, Pemberton and Hammond of Queen

Anne's and Henry of Worcester.

On that day, largely on account of the Militia Bill's failure, Gov. Bladen

prorogued the Assembly, whose record of 37 divisions far surpassed any pre-

vious Session.

A new Assembly was chosen and sat from March 12 to 29, 1745/6. This

was another " addled " session. Bladen told the members that he summoned

xiv Letter of Transmission.

them because of a message from Gov. Clinton of New York that there was

danger that the Six Nations would be seduced by the French and because of

the Jacobite Rebellion in England. The Assembly adopted loyal addresses and

signed an Association, pledging fidelity to the Crown; though the Lower House

made some scruple as to the original wording of the document, which seemed

to show them too well content with Proprietary rule. Nothing was done as to

the Indians. The usual resolves claiming rights of Englishmen were spread on

the House Journal. Key took the place of Abell and Mills, who had been

Subject: Re: Twiford connection

Last time we exchanged messages I stated that no connection between Revel Twiford and Randall Revell had been established. I also suggested that many other families often named children after people that they respected and that this is how I suspected Revel Twiford received his name. While I believed this to be good information, I have since discovered a true Revell connection andfelt that I must correct my previous statement as soon as possible.

Mary Revell daughter of John & Agnes Revell who was born after 1711 married Zorobabel Rodgers the son of Daniel & Hannah Rodgers and who died 29 Jan 1793. Mary & Zorobabel had a daughter named Tabitha Rodgers born ca. 1750 who died in 1800. Tabitha married Robert Twiford son of Daniel and Tamer Twiford. After Tabitha's death Robert married 2nd. on 14 Mar 1805 to Comfort Copes West. Tabitha and Robert had a son Revell Twiford born 1764 whose will was written 11 Mar 1828, particially proven on 25 Dec 1837 but not fully proven until 29 Jan 1838. Revell married in 1783 to Rachel West born in 1764 daughter of Eleanor Revell and Anthony West and sister of Revel West and 2nd. to Mary Unknown.

George Twiford Robert's brother is reported to have also married an unknown Revell as well. I have no proof of this marraige and I am searching for more information.

So Revel Twiford is grandson to Mary Revell & Zoroababel Rodgers and son-in-law to Eleanor Revell West & Anthony West. As yet, I do not know how Eleanor Revell fits into the Revell lineage and she remains a mystery. Mary Revell is Randall Revell's great-granddaughter [snip]

The list of children was a consolidation of what was supplied reading the various LW&T, Whitelaw and others and a document written by Don Bellessa and listed on the GHOTES website under Family Data Files..Descendants of William Twiford. I would recommend that each of you read Don's article. It is well documented and covers the TWIFORD FAMILY over a wide period of time.

This book also contains the LW&T of Revell Twiford Sr., Robert Twiford Twiford and Wiley Jones Twiford. According to Revell Twiford's LW&T his children were as follows: Revell W. Twiford, George W. Twiford, Elizabeth W. Ayres. At the time of death Revell's wife was named "Mary".

I also received two emails from other Twiford's. I have attached all messages together to help each of you talk to other cousins.
