He married twice. He married Harriett E. Mitchell in Worcester Co., MD, January 22, 1850. Harriett was born 1832. He married Emily Thomas in Worcester Co., MD, November 21, 1855. He was a sailor.

Joshua Hitch Sturgis and Harriett E. Mitchell had the following child:
