43. Joshua⁴ Sturgis (Sr.) (Richard³, John², John¹) was born about 1743. Joshua died 1815 in Worcester Co., MD, at 72 years of age.

He married Mary Jones January 29, 1764. Mary died 1817 in Worcester Co., MD. He bought land as Joshua of Richard in 1788. He is the Joshua of Richard cited in the will of Capt. Joshua Sturgis in 1773. Probably the Joshua Sturgis, Revolutionary Patriot. 1783 Tax List shows him with "Chance," and "Littleworth" 2M, 5F at Mattapony Hundred. Information from a family Bible or prayer book is on file at the Maryland Historical Society.

Joshua Sturgis(Sr.) and Mary Jones had the following children:

95 i. Jesse⁵ Sturgis was born February, 1769. Jesse died 1821 in Worcester Co., MD, at 52 years of age. He married Diadama Johnson. Diadama was the daughter of Eleakim Johnson. Jesse was Constable at Mattapony Hundred. (dates from Sturgis Bible at MD Hist. Soc.)

96 ii. John Sturgis was born October 10, 1771. John died before 1783.

97 iii. Eleanor Sturgis was born February 25, 1772.

98 iv. Mary "Polly" Sturgis was born January 14, 1774. She married (N) Duer.

99 v. Sally Sturgis was born November 1, 1776.

100 vi. Joshua Sturgis was born November 1, 1778. Joshua died before 1783.

101 vii. Nancy Sturgis was born October 9, 1781. She married (N) Taylor.

+ 102 viii. Martha Sturgis was born January 27, 1783.

103 ix. Sarah Sturgis was born February 22. Sarah died before 1776.
