He married MARY SELBY. MARY was the daughter of ZADOCK SELBY (Sr.) and TABITHA (wife of Zadock Selby). Mary was not named in her father's will, but her daughter was called granddaughter of Zadock Selby.

He made a will in Worcester Co., MD, February 4, 1782. (Ruth T. Dryden, JW4 f.489, p.54)

THOMAS's will was probated in Worcester Co., MD, February 26, 1782. He was named by Martha Selby as grandson in her 1780 will. Thomas named his wife and father-in-law and daughter. A Thomas Sturgis, Private, Worcester Militia, Wicomico Battalion, Capt. William Handy's Company, 7th Class July 15, 1780 and a Thomas Sturgis, Private, 5th Maryland Line who enlisted July 5, 1777 and was reported as "left out" in July, 1778, are shown in Peden's book, followed by the date of death for Thomas Purnell Sturgis. (Henry C. Peden, Jr., Revolutionary Patriots of Worcester & Somerset Counties, Willow Bend Books, Westminster, MD, 1999) Thomas Purnell Sturgis is shown as a silversmith with Lot 11 in Snow Hill, MD.

THOMAS PURNALL STURGIS and MARY SELBY had the following child:

child 193 i. BETSY CUSTIS OR CURTIS6 STURGIS was born 1781. She married GEORGE SELBY in Worcester Co., MD, December 20, 1797. (Barnes, Maryland Marriages) Betsy was under 16 at the time of her father's will.
