Regionalism On The Eastern Shore of Virginia
In 1970, the Commonwealth of Virginia created the Planning District Commissions to address regional issues and foster cooperation among the counties of Virginia. Separated from the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay, the Counties of Accomack and Northampton made up the original members of the new Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission (A-NPDC). Since then the Town of Chincoteague has also become a member.
Assisting the counties in improving local conditions and conserving the unique culture and nature of the Eastern Shore of Virginia has been the mission of the A-NPDC for 40 years. Today, the A-NPDC is joined by two other affiliate organizations, the Accomack-Northampton Regional Housing Authority (A-NRHA) and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Housing Alliance (ESVHA). All three organizations are partners and staffed by the A-NPDC.
"The Housing Office"
On the Eastern Shore of Virginia, we are sometimes known as "the Housing Office". Although separate entities, each organization has a mission of improving, and developing housing for residents of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The Accomack-Northampton Regional Housing Authority focuses on providing rental housing, privately or Authority-owned. The Eastern Shore of Virginia Housing Alliance focuses on improving housing for homeowners. The Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission almost exclusively works on housing development only as a portion of a greater mission of building up local communities.»»»

7/27/2010 "Nandua" repair work commences. The A-NTDC, not to be confused with the A-NPDC, and Bay Coast Railroad has begun repairs to the railcar float barge that brings materials from Little Creek, Norfolk. The repairs are being funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and a loan from A-NPDC's ESV Revolving Loan Fund. Repair specifications and field survey have been completed.
7/15/2010 A-NPDC staff met with the VA Coastal Zone Management Program and the Wachapreague Park Planning Committee today to discuss a potential Plant Eastern Shore Natives Demonstration Garden in the new Wachapreague Park. The A-NPDC has helped Wachapreague attain funds from the VA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation to help t...he town develop their new park at the site of the former Wachapreague Hotel.
7/9/2010The A-NPDC has received a $58,000 allocation from VDOT for continued transportation planning on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
7/9/2010The A-NPDC continues to partner with the Health Department on the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program. The A-NPDC has written a successful $23,188 application, on behalf of the Health Department, and will also provide housing inspection services for eligible residents of the Eastern Shore.
