Mr. Joe Scott, as he was called, owned a basket factory at Wellington, between Princess Anne and Pocomoke, with his brother, Mr. Billy. They owned forest land near the factory and grew gum trees, the gum of which was used for making baskets. They made strawberry, peach, pea and tomato baskets and strawberry crates. The cleared land near the factory was owned by the Porter family. The basket factory flourished until Joe's health declined and the gum tree forest was depleted. Joe left Wellington and moved to Princess Anne and his brother moved to Pocomoke. The little town of Wellington disappeared when the post office and school were closed. On the site of Joe's homestead now sits the Wellington Wildlife Preserve.
