He married twice. He married Charlotte Ann Selby in Worcester Co., MD, May 21, 1829. Charlotte was born 1806. Charlotte died August 3, 1839 in Worcester Co., MD, at 33 years of age. He married Martha Adaline Purnell in Worcester Co., MD, October 10, 1840. (Mary Beth & Vanessa Long, Worcester Co. Marriage Licenses) Martha was the daughter of Robert Jenkins Henry Purnell(Dr.) and Sarah "Sally" I. Franklin. The 1850 census shows a Martha A. Purnell, age 9, living with John and Jane Sturgis. As yet, this younger Martha A. is unplaced. Nevirt Schoolfield named Littleton S. and Edward A. Sturgis as sons of James W. L. Sturgis in his 1848 Worcester will. These two were to receive his lands after the death of his wife, Caroline. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Co. Will Book LPS, f. 387, p. 47) James is found in the 1850 census of Worcester County. His year of birth and children are taken from the census.

278 ii. Edwin Anson Sturgis was born in Worcester Co., MD November 29, 1832. Birth record shown in St. Martins Parish Register. He was named in the will of Nevett Schoolfield in 1848 as "Edward A.S." He might be the Edward Sturgis who appears in the Philadelphia, PA city directory 1880-1894 as a butcher with Farrell & Sturgis. His address is the same as his cousin, Zadock Sturgis. The 1885 directory also shows a Zachariah Sturgis at the same address. (research of Kay Davis)
