The abbreviated name of the grave site where each burial is located is listed after each entry in the book.  These abbreviations are listed here in alphabetical order, followed by their map location number, full name, detailed location descriptions, and surnames of all families buried at each site.  Family surnames are not listed for the large public cemeteries and churchyards as the list would be too extensive.  Since most African Americans are buried in separate large public cemeteries, African-American is listed after those sites.  The names of many of the small family sites were unavailable to the compiler.  In these cases, a name was selected based on either the predominate surname at the site, the oldest tombstone at the site, or the nearest placename.  To distinguish between multiple sites having the same family name, a nearby placename was added to the family surname.

Will      (26) Williams Plot at Sanford - On the northwest side of Sanford past the east end of Old Shad Landing Road (now named Whites Road).  Proceed beyond the end of the pavement, following the old road bed into and across a marshy area until it turns to the right, then go left in a northwesterly direction and follow the ditch bank which separates the Virginia Game Commission marsh (signs posted on trees) to the left and the woodland to the right.  About 200 yards before the end of the ditch bank follow the right fork as it turns to the northeast and into the woods and follow it to the end and continue in the same direction about another 75 yards to the graves, which are about 50 feet west of the remains of a brick house foundation.  (Williams)
