140. George⁶ Gilchrist (Tabitha⁵ Bayley, Edmund⁴, Hannah³ Scarburgh, Ursula² Whittington, William¹) was born in Accomack Co., VA about 1745. George died 1789 in Accomack Co., VA, at 44 years of age.

George entered the Continental Army as Captain on July 4, 1776. He was taken prisoner at Germantown on October 4, 1777, freed in prisoner exchange on November 2, 1780 and retired as Major February 12, 1781. He left his estate to Andrew. (Franklin Thompson)

George Gilchrist had the following child:

341 i. Andrew⁷ Gilchrist. He married Laney Middleton in Accomack Co., VA, April 15, 1805. Andrew inherited more than 5,000 acres of "bounty land." It is not proved that she is his daughter, but an Elizabeth Gilchrist born about 1787, married John Cannon. Her grandfather was "said" to be Major George Gilchrist. (Franklin Thompson)
