86. Thomas6 Marshall (Esme5, Thomas4, John3, Thomas2, John1) was born in Northampton Co., VA September 9, 1746. Date recorded in the back of John Drummond Marshall's prayer book. (copy at Maryland Historical Society); he was probably born in Northampton. Thomas died 1791 at 44 years of age. His date of death is shown in the file with the prayer book. A record of his death has not been located and it is not known if he and Esther stayed in Worcester after selling their lands there in 1786.

He married Esther Marshall** in Conventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD, March 25, 1766. (Parish records-F. Edward Wright, MD Eastern Shore Vital Records Vol. 2, p. 88)

Esther was born in Conventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD January 6, 1748. (Parish records show dob 1747-F. Edward Wright, MD Eastern Shore Vital Statistics, Vol. 2, p. 106; prayer book of John Drummond Marshall shows dob 1748) Esther was the daughter of Thomas Marshall** and Jane(widow of Abraham Heath).

Esther died after December 26, 1786 at approximately 38 years of age. Last date on which her name appears in the sale of land in Worcester County. NOTE: Surname Marshall identified with ** indicates the Bayside Marshall family. Esther's ancestors and siblings can be found at the ghote, Miles Files by M.K. & Barry Miles. Information about Thomas and his wife, Esther, is recorded in the back of a prayer book belonging to his brother, John D. Marshall. The prayer book was given to the Maryland Historical Society by Mrs. Bell Johnston Bushnell in 1943. Notes in the file state that Mrs. Bushnell was a great great granddaughter of Thomas Marshall 1746-1791. (John D. A Thomas Marshall served as Captain of the Worcester Militia, Snow Hill Battalion, August 30, 1777, taking the Oath of Allegiance in Worcester County in 1778 before the Hon. James Selby. Another Thomas Marshall served as a 1st Lt. of the Worcester Militia. (Henry C. WHO WAS THOMAS MARSHALL AND HIS WIFE ESTHER MARSHALL? With the information found in the prayer book of John Drummond Marshall, Thomas Marshall and his wife, Esther Marshall, are identified. Thomas is a descendant of the Northampton family and Esther is a descendant of the Bayside, or Someret, family.

Thomas Marshall was born September 9, 1746, Northampton Co. VA, and died after December 26, 1786. He was the son of Esme Marshall and Mary Nairn. Thomas married Esther Marshall on March 25, 1766 in Somerset Co., MD. Esther Marshall was born January 6, 1748-9 Somerset Co., MD, the daughter of Thomas Marshall and Jane. Thomas and Esther Marshall had at least three children whose births were recorded in Coventry Parish records, Somerset Co., MD. Thomas was named father of Mary Marshall in the will of Mary's grandfather, Thomas Marshall, dated April 24, 1786 Somerset Co. MD. Thomas bought land in Worcester Co. MD in 1768 and either bought or was given other parcels in that county in 1771, 1772, 1773 and 1786. The 1783 Tax List shows Thomas with 244 acres at Pitts Creek, Worcester County: "Conveniency" and "Rudder." There are 4 males of age and 2 females. Thomas and his wife, Esther, sold several parcels in August and December, 1786.

The John Drummond Marshall prayer book: Records recorded by John Drummond Marshall in his prayer book were transcribed and filed at the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, MD, and later the prayer book itself was given to the Society. John Drummond Marshall recorded his first marriage, births of his children, brother-in-law and 1st wife's deaths in the prayer book. He (or the next owner of the prayer book) then devoted all other records in the prayer book to the lineage and descendants of Mary Marshall, his niece, daughter of his brother Thomas. Entries were made to the prayer book after John Drummond Marshall's death in 1800 regarding the marriage of Mary Purnell to Levin Stewart and the births of their children, indicating the prayer book's possession may have passed to Mary Marshall Purnell and/or her daughter, Mary Purnell Stewart.
