5. Thomas John2 Marshall (Mjr.) (Patience1 "V") was born in Northampton Co., VA about 1725. Thomas died 1773 in Dorchester Co., MD, at 48 years of age. In his will dated March 13, 1773, probate May 6, 1773, Thomas John named his wife, Sarah, sons John, Theophilas, Levin, Henry and James and daughters Patience, Sarah and Mary. Son, John, was named executor; witnesses: John Anderton, Thomas Muir and Bartholomew Adams. (39.366 Dorcester Co., MD, Maryland Calendar of Wills, Vol. 15, 1772-1774, p. 74)
He married twice. He married an unknown person about 1747. He married Sarah Darby in Northampton Co., VA, about 1751. (Robert Barnes, Maryland Marriages 1634-1777) Thomas John was Sheriff and Justice of the Peace for Northampton Co VA. He purchased 500A 'Carthagena' on a branch of Secretary Creek near New Market. His purchase of "Carthagena" on June 25, 1768 is the earliest record of his being in Dorchester County. (Notes of James H. Marshall from Deeds Old 22, p. 386) It is presumed most of his children were born in Northampton County, VA.

There was an Esmet Marshall in the 1800 Dorchester census (p. 591), almost certainly a descendant or relative of Thomas John or his brother, Esme Marshall. This may have been Esme, son of John Drummond Marshall, grandson of Esme Marshall & Mary Nairn.

Levin is cited in the household of his brother, John, in 1783. By 1799, Levin and Henry bought a lot in East New Market. In 1799, Henry Marshall sold furniture. Notes of Jim Marshall indicate Levin's wife's name as Margaret and that he died in 1822. A Levin Marshall married Sarah A. Banning November 16, 1819. 26 v. Sarah "Sally" Marshall. She married Thomas Brereton February 26, 1781. Notes of James H. Marshall: the marriage record describes her as the daughter of Mjr. Thomas Marshall of Northampton Co. (18th Century Virginia Newspapers by Robert K. Headley, Jr., 1987, p. 38). This marriage record sounds similar to one in the Dielman File at the Maryland Historical Society, and this latter record suggests Thomas John as Sarah or Sally's father. Thomas John did name a daughter, Sarah. The Breretons were justices of the peace in Somerset County, MD.
In 1783, she is cited in the household of her brother, John.
