120. John4 Purnell (Hezekia3, John2, Thomas1) was born 1755. John died after 1840 in Somerset Co., MD. A John Purnell, son of Hezekiah, took the Oath of Allegiance in Worcester Co. in 1778 before the Hon. Nehemiah Holland. (Henry C. Peden, Jr., Revolutionary Patriots of Worcester & Somerset Cos. MD, Willow Bend, Westminster, MD, 1999, p. 238) A John Purnell, Private, served in the Worcester Militia, Wicomico Battalion, under Captain Fisher Walton's Company, 5th Class, July 15, 1780. At age 85, he was a pensioner in 1840 in the 3rd Division of Somerset County and residing in the household of Dryden Purnell. (Peden, p. 238) It is thought the John of Hezekiah who took the Oath is the same John who served in the Wicomico Battalion (the Battalion in which others from the Mattapony family served). It is assumed that Dryden Purnell is a relation of John (son? grandson?). John Purnell had the following child:
