He married Mary "Molly" Nelson in Northampton Co., VA, March 24, 1763. Mary was the daughter of John Nelson(Jr.) and Elishe Jacob. Joseph Freshwater, in his 1786 will, named his nieces & nephew: Nelson, Elisha and Nancy, of Jacob Freshwater. He also named his "sister" Mary Greenoway. (James H. Jacob Freshwater and Mary "Molly" Nelson had the following children:
