11. John3 TILNEY (John2, John1) (#13) was born 1675. John was of age by 1688 when his father gave him land. (ref: Whitelaw) A John Tilney was age 62 in court records July, 1737 (Houston) John died about 1741 in Northampton Co. VA.

He married four times. He married Elizabeth. (ref: LDS submission - not proved) She was dead by 1709. (Elizabeth is #46.)

He married Ann about 1710. Ann was the widow of Robert Moore, who died intestate in Northampton Co. VA. John Tilney administered the will 28 Feb 1709-10 "in right of his wife, Ann Moore, late the widow of the deceased." (ref: Marshall) (Ann is #47.)

He married Sarah NOTTINGHAM after 1727. (ref: Bill Wilkins & Bill Leatherbury - Ghotes) (Sarah NOTTINGHAM is #357.) Sarah was the daughter of Richard NOTTINGHAM and Mary CLARKE.

He married Mary STRINGER about 1737. Mary Stringer married Savage Bloxom before February 24, 1736. Bloxom died by June 14, 1737, and she married John Tilney. After Tilney's death about 1741, she married John Marshall, Jr. by March 15, 1744. (ref: Jim Marshall - Ghote)

(Mary STRINGER is #49.) Mary was the daughter of Jacob STRINGER and Elishe HARMANSON.

Mary died about 1747 in Northampton Co. VA.

He made a will in Northampton Co. VA, 1737. (ref: Marshall) John Tilney, Sr. patented 350 acres at Sandy Point (N111) in 1666. John (wife, Mary) deeded it all to his son, John. In 1742, Whitelaw shows John Tilney, Jr. leaving to his son, Jonathan, and in 1771 Hezekiah Tilney, son of Jonathan sold Sandy Point. (ref: Whitelaw)

The land adjoining Sandy Point was N112, Muddy Branch. Whitelaw shows the patent by John Tilney, Sr. for 350 acres in 1666 with the Sandy Point land and that all the land was given to John Tilney, Jr. Here, however, Whitelaw related that John Tilney, Jr. left Muddy Branch to his son, Hezekiah Tilney in 1742. Hezekiah gave the land to Mary Marshall, wife of John, the widow of John Tilney, Jr., for her lifetime. By 1747, the land was back in the hands of Hezekiah Tilney of Worcester County, Maryland. The land descent for a property called "Benefield" in Worcester County, Maryland, shows it purchased by Hezekiah Tilney (son of John, Jr.) in 1748 and his leaving it to his son, Jonathan, (wife Elizabeth) in 1754. In possession of Hezekiah by his will of 1776. "Simpleton" in Worcester County, Maryland was purchased by Hezekiah Tilney in 1751 and left to his sons: Jonathan and Stringer in 1754. The birth order or the mother of John's children is not proved.

John TILNEY had the following children:

child 35 i. Susanna4 TILNEY (#136). She married William SMITH. (William SMITH is #137.) William died 1750. Susanna is named as Susanna Smith in her father's will. The will of William Smith, 1750, names his wife, Susanna, and devises a Negro, Pleasant. From the tax lists, this William smith lives near John Tilney in the same tax district. child + 38 iv. Jonathan TILNEY.

child + 39 v. Hezekiah TILNEY was born 1703.
