164. Susanna Upshur⁶ Custis (John⁵, Thomas⁴, Tabitha Scarburgh³ Whittington, William², William¹) was born before 1738. Susanna died after 1779.

She married twice. She married Samuel Wise before 1768. Samuel was born in Accomack Co., VA December 1, 1740. Samuel was the son of Thomas Wise and Mary Margaretta Hack. Samuel died 1778 in Accomack Co., VA, at 37 years of age. He made a will in Accomack Co., VA, November 12, 1778. Probate January 27, 1779. She married Thomas Slocum after 1778. Thomas died 1784 in Accomack Co., VA. He made a will in Accomack Co., VA, July 31, 1784. Probate September 28, 1784. "My will is that as much of the estate of Samuel Wise will pay his three daughters and then the remainder of my estate I give to my wife and my two children to maintain & educate them." (Stratton Nottingham, Wills & Administrations Accomack Co., VA, p. 348) She was called granddaughter in the will of Arthur Upshur in 1738. (Bill Wilkins)

NOTE: there appears to be a question if this Susanna Upshur Custis is one and the same as married Samuel Wise, as she was at least eight years older than Wise and would have been in her 40's when her children by Slocum were born. Thomas Slocum's 1784 will supports his wife being the widow of Samuel Wise. It is doubtful that Susanna Custis, wife of Samuel Wise and Thomas Slocum was Susanna Upshur Custis, daughter of John Custis and Ann Upshur. Other research indicates the Susanna Custis who married Samuel Wise was born 4/2/1746 and died 8/31/1800. If this is the case, this Susanna could not be the daughter of John and Ann Upshur Custis, since both were deceased by 1738. In his research on the Wise family, Dr. Bill Burton indicates Samuel's wife was Susanna Custis, daughter of Major John Custis and Joan (N).

Susanna Upshur Custis and Samuel Wise had the following children:

384 i. Elizabeth⁷ Wise. She married John Blackstone. John was the son of William Blackstone and Leah Cropper. John died about 1800. (parents-Bill Burton) (marriage-Bill Driscoll)

385 ii. Ann Custis Wise was born in Accomack Co., VA March 19, 1768.

386 iii. Tabitha Wise was born in Accomack Co., VA June 19, 1768. Tabitha died 1783 in Accomack Co., VA, at 15 years of age.

387 iv. Susanna "Sukey" Wise was born June 20, 1776. Susanna died after 1798. She married Thomas Ames March 31, 1794. Thomas was the son of Thomas Ames and Tabitha Mears. Thomas died after 1817.

388 v. Thomas Wise was born in Accomack Co., VA October 29, 1777. Thomas died February 26, 1807 in Accomack Co., VA, at 29 years of age. (Ralph T. Whitelaw, Virginia's Eastern Shore, p. 1072)

Susanna Upshur Custis and Thomas Slocum had the following children:

389 vi. William Slocum(Jr.). William died after 1784.

390 vii. Salley Slocum. Salley died after 1784.
