He married Gertrude King Henry. Gertrude was the daughter of Robert Jenkins Henry(Col.) and Gertrude Rousby. She made a will in Worcester Co., MD, February 9, 1831. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Co. MD Wills MH 1822-1833, p. 37)

Gertrude's will was probated in Worcester Co., MD, March 22, 1831. Gertrude's will named her sister, Mary King Purnell. Land records show Gertrude and her son, Robert J.H. Purnell, selling to Thomas Simpson Fassitt "Charles Choice," "Spring Garden" and "Bell Air." (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Land Records)

William's will was probated in Worcester Co., MD, April 2, 1798. He was Private in the Worcester Militia, Sinepuxent Bn., Capt. John Rackliff's Co., 4th Class, 1779-80. He may be the William Purnell who took the Oath of Allegiance in Worceter in 1778 in Bogerternorton Hundred before Hon. Thomas Purnell. He served in the Lower House of the MD Legislature 1785-1793, as County Court Justice in 1793 and Captain, 9th Militia Regiment, commissioned in 1794. (Henry C.
