He married Priscilla Polk 1760. Priscilla was born about 1740. Priscilla was the daughter of James Polk and Elizabeth(wife of James Polk). Priscilla died about 1834. He served as a Corporal, Somerset Militia, Princess Anne Battalion, under Capt. John Williams' and later as Colonel, Watkins Point Co., in 1780 during the Revolution. (Matthew M. William named his wife and son, James, in his will dated December 29, 1815. He also named his grandchildren. (Ruth T. Dryden, Somerset Co. MD Wills 1800-1820 EB23, San Diego, CA, p. 70)
