 182. Moses7 Purnell (Matthew6, Elizabeth5 Marshall, Isaac4, John3, Thomas2, John1) was born in Worcester Co., MD 1784. Moses died April 19, 1859 in Worcester Co., MD, at 74 years of age. (notes of Suzanne B. Hurley, Ocean City Lifesaving Museum) He married twice. He married Charlotte Maddox in Worcester Co., MD, May 22, 1810. (Melanie Ayres Merryweather, Genealogy of the Purnell Family) Charlotte died before 1821. He married Maria Mary Bowen in Worcester Co., MD, before 1821. Maria was the daughter of James Bowen and Mary Ann Riley. His father left him "Addition to Thurbin (Sherborn)". Moses was named by his sister in 1829. Moses and Maria are listed in the 1850 census at Berline, MD: Moses 65, Maria 45, Moses 19, Josephine 14, Levi 8. Moses Purnell and Maria Mary Bowen had the following children: 
 
 William was born February 12, 1816. William was the son of James Pitts and Nancy F. Tingle. William died December 15, 1897 at 81 years of age.  Isaac was born in Washington, DC December 14, 1815. Isaac was the son of James Henry Handy and Maria A. P. Gillis. Isaac died June 14, 1878 in Philadelphia, PA, at 62 years of age. (Matthew Wise, The Littleton Heritage, p. 305; decendants are continued in Melanie Ayres Merryweather's Genealogy of the Purnell Family, p. 26) 
 Margaret was born 1825. Margaret died 1895 at 70 years of age. William was a dedicated advocate for the Union during the Civil War, organizing a military unit which became known as "Purnell's Legion." He was a member of the Maryland Bar, postmaster and an educator. William Henry Purnell is remembered as the man who raised a legion to save Worcester County for the Union. (Maryland Times Press, Michael Morgan, November 6, 1996--(Melanie Ayres Merryweather, Genealogy of the Purnell Family, p. 27) His ten children are traced in Merryweather's Genealogy of the Purnell Family. William and Margaret, both age 24, are living with their one month old daughter, Mary, in the household with E. D. Martin, Clerk of County, Joseph P. W. Richardson, Clerk, and others. William's occupation is shown as lawyer, in the 1850 census.
