He married twice. He married Charlotte Maddox in Worcester Co., MD, May 22, 1810. (Melanie Ayres Merryweather, Genealogy of the Purnell Family)

Charlotte died before 1821. He married Maria Mary Bowen in Worcester Co., MD, before 1821. Maria was the daughter of James Bowen and Mary Ann Riley. His father left him "Addition to Thurbin (Sherborn)". Moses was named by his sister in 1829. Moses and Maria are listed in the 1850 census at Berline, MD: Moses 65, Maria 45, Moses 19, Josephine 14, Levi 8.

398 ii. Erexine Sarah Purnell was born in Worcester Co., MD April 3, 1816. Erexine died August 1, 1892 at 76 years of age. She married William Dale Pitts in Worcester Co., MD, April 4, 1838. (Bond date April 2, Mary Beth & Vanessa Long, Worcester Marriage Records)

William was born February 12, 1816. William was the son of James Pitts and Nancy F. Tingle. William died December 15, 1897 at 81 years of age. Information for Erexine came from Matthew Wise's, The Littleton Heritage. Her line is continued in this reference, page 404 and in Melanie Ayres Merryweather's, Genealogy of the Purnell Family p. 26.

399 iii. Mary Jane Rozelle Purnell was born in Queponco, Worcester Co., MD December 20, 1821. Mary died February 29, 1848 in Warsaw, Benton Co., MO, at 26 years of age. Buried at Buckingham Presbyterian Church Cemetery. She married Isaac William Ker Handy(Rev.) in Queponco, Worcester Co., MD, October 29, 1839.

Isaac was born in Washington, DC December 14, 1815. Isaac was the son of James Henry Handy and Maria A. P. Gillis. Isaac died June 14, 1878 in Philadelphia, PA, at 62 years of age. 400 iv. William Henry Purnell was born in Worcester Co., MD 1826. William died 1902 at 76 years of age. He married Margaret Neill Martin in Worcester Co., MD, June 13, 1849. (Mary Beth & Vanessa Long, Worcester Marriage Records)

Margaret was born 1825. Margaret died 1895 at 70 years of age. William was a dedicated advocate for the Union during the Civil War, organizing a military unit which became known as "Purnell's Legion." He was a member of the Maryland Bar, postmaster and an educator. William Henry Purnell is remembered as the man who raised a legion to save Worcester County for the Union. (Maryland Times Press, Michael Morgan, November 6, 1996--(Melanie Ayres Merryweather, Genealogy of the Purnell Family, p. 27) His ten children are traced in Merryweather's Genealogy of the Purnell Family.

William and Margaret, both age 24, are living with their one month old daughter, Mary, in the household with E. D. Martin, Clerk of County, Joseph P. W. Richardson, Clerk, and others. William's occupation is shown as lawyer, in the 1850 census.

402 vi. Josephine Elizabeth Marshall Purnell was born in Worcester Co., MD September 20, 1836.

404 viii. Charles Houston Purnell was born in Worcester Co., MD 1848. Charles died 1906 in Worcester Co., MD, at 58 years of age. He married Margaret Coffin 1874. Margaret was born 1855. Margaret was the daughter of Isaac Coffin. Margaret died 1890 in Worcester Co., MD, at 35 years of age. Her body was interred in Worcester Co., MD, Buckingham Church.
