She married James W.(Wilson) L.(Littleton) Sturgis in Worcester Co., MD, October 10, 1840. (Mary Beth & Vanessa Long, Worcester Co. Marriage Licenses)

James was born 1809. James was the son of Littleton Sturgis and Jane Wilson. James died after 1850. Nevirt Schoolfield named Littleton S. and Edward A. Sturgis as sons of James W. L. Sturgis in his 1848 Worcester will. These two were to receive his lands after the death of his wife, Caroline. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Co. Will Book LPS, f. 387, p. 47) James is found in the 1850 census of Worcester County. His year of birth and children are taken from the census. The 1850 census shows a Martha A. Purnell, age 9, living with John and Jane Sturgis. As yet, this younger Martha A. is unplaced.
