363. CHARLES THOMAS7 MARSHALL (ROBERT NAIRN6, MARY "POLLY"5 WHITTINGTON, SOUTHY4, SOUTHY3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) (#399) was born in Somerset Co MD August 4, 1823. CHARLES died October 10, 1871 in Somerset Co MD, at 48 years of age. His body was interred in Princess Anne Co MD, Manokin Presbyterian Church.

He married PRISCILLA VIRGINIA PORTER in Somerset Co MD, April 3, 1849. (PRISCILLA VIRGINIA PORTER is #400.) PRISCILLA was born in Somerset Co MD August 7, 1831. PRISCILLA was the daughter of WILLIAM PORTER and SALLY MILES. PRISCILLA died July 31, 1880 in Somerset Co MD, at 48 years of age. Her body was interred in Princess Anne MD, Manokin Presbyterian Church. Charles' father died when he was less than two years old. He lived with his older brother, Robert, after his mother's death when he was 15. Charles built "Holly Grove" on the southern boundary of Princess Anne, Maryland, close to and east of the railroad tracks. Charles and Pricella are shown in the 1850 census of Brinkleys District, Somerset County, MD, age 26 and 19 respectively. His occupation is shown as 'taylor' and worth as $1,500. Charles' name appears on a list of citizens on a petition to bring a bank to Princess Anne. Charles was elected as one of the first commissioners of Pocomoke City (originally New Town) in 1860.

Charles died when his family was young and Priscilla, age 40, with seven children to raise. Priscilla died eight years later. The younger children lived with their older sister, Ida, and her husband, Fillmore, at the family home, "Holly Grove." Son, Frank, went to Kansas City to live with his older sister, Jennie Whittington, and Rush, at age 14, sold a cow to gain the money needed to go to Philadelphia and stay with his mother's family.

child 447 ii. IDA ANNA MARSHALL (#405) was born in Somerset Co MD September 23, 1854. IDA died December 19, 1943 in Somerset Co MD, at 89 years of age. She married HENRY FILLMORE LANKFORD in Somerset Co MD, June 23, 1880. (HENRY FILLMORE LANKFORD is #406.) HENRY was born 1856. HENRY was the son of HENRY SMITH LANKFORD and MARY DAMERON PINCKARD. HENRY died 1935 at 79 years of age. Henry was a lawyer and lived at "Beckford" in Princess Anne.

child 448 iii. WILLIAM CHARLES MARSHALL (#407) was born in Somerset Co MD October 27, 1857. WILLIAM died September 7, 1909 at 51 years of age. He married ELIZABETH FARRELL. (ELIZABETH FARRELL is #408.)

child 449 iv. RUSH PORTER MARSHALL (#409) was born in Somerset Co MD December 18, 1860. RUSH died December 10, 1898 in Ontario CA, at 37 years of age. He married MARY AUGUSTA "MAME" HAYWARD in Philadelphia PA, September 14, 1887. (MARY AUGUSTA "MAME" HAYWARD is #410.) MARY was born in Woburn MA June 5, 1862. MARY was the daughter of ARZA HARRIS HAYWARD and ANN JANETTE FLAGG. MARY died September 29, 1926 in Washington DC, at 64 years of age. Rush came to Philadelphia, PA to live with his uncle, F. Wesley Porter and his wife, Ella, in a section of the city called Germantown. He first took a job at a paint shop and was later employed by John Buter at his drug store on the northwest corner of Manheim Street and Germantown Avenue. He attended Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (Class of 1880-81). After a two-year wait to attain the required age, he obtained his degree, Ph.G. In 1886, he opened his own drugstore at 16th and Race Streets.

In December of 1895, due to tuberculosis, he moved the family near his sister, Jennie Whittington, in Monrovia, California. In 1898, he was a patient at the San Gabriel Sanitarium for Pulmonary Diseases. A twenty-two page, hand-written letter from Jane Frances Hayward, "Aunt Fannie," tells much of the life and times of the Whittington and Marshall families while Rush and his family were in California (written to C. Hayward Marshall in 1948) Two months before his death, Rush wrote a letter on San Gabriel Sanitarium stationery and mailed in a company envelope of the The Marshall Field Company in North Ontario, CA. In this letter, Rush wrote: "I wish I'd never met a Field. What involvement, if any, did Rush have with the Marshall Field Company?

After his death, Mame moved the young family back to Philadelphia.

child 450 v. FRANK THOMAS MARSHALL (#424) was born in Somerset Co MD December 8, 1863. FRANK died October 13, 1933 at 69 years of age. He married AGNES (wife of Frank Marshall). (AGNES (wife of Frank Marshall) is #425.)

child 451 vi. EMILY ESTELLE "STELL" MARSHALL (#426) was born in Somerset Co MD April 14, 1868. EMILY died 1954 at 86 years of age. She married CLARENCE PINCKARD LANKFORD in Somerset Co MD, December 12, 1894. (CLARENCE PINCKARD LANKFORD is #427.) CLARENCE was born 1864. CLARENCE was the son of HENRY SMITH LANKFORD and MARY DAMERON PINCKARD. CLARENCE died 1950 at 86 years of age. Clarence was a lawyer in Crisfield, MD. He and Emily are buried at Manokin Presbyterian Church, Princess Anne, MD.

child 452 vii. HATTIE EVELYN MARSHALL (#428) was born in Somerset Co MD September 23, 1870. She married JOSEPH GUNBY SCOTT. (JOSEPH GUNBY SCOTT is #429.) JOSEPH was born in Somerset Co. MD March 12, 1863. JOSEPH was the son of WILLIAM JAMES SCOTT and ELIZABETH MARGARET DRYDEN. JOSEPH died September 26, 1911 in Somerset Co. MD, at 48 years of age. (William Marshall Scott) Hattie stayed with her brother, Rush, in Philadelphia while attending the Friends School there.
